British curriculum schools - university qualifications

Hi everyone

I've got a question for those with experience in British curriculum schools Years 10 to 13.

While I don't know if it's possible nowadays, but back when I was studying here in Dubai, I completed my IGCSE examinations after 10 years of schooling and joined the American University in Dubai. They excepted my IGCSE qualifications and I basically skipped two years of schooling and went right to university. Saved my dad a lot of money and I was ahead of my similar-age peers in the workforce.

Fast forward 22 years to current times, my eldest son will be a Year 10 student next year. At the school I'm considering, students complete their GCSE (or IGCSE, can't recall) examinations at the end of Year 11.

So, if I can save time and money on a year or two for my son's schooling, then I'd definitely opt for that!

Has anyone in recent years considered university options after completing I/GCSE, or had such experience of joining university with these qualifications without having to complete Years 12 and 13? Which universities are now accepting this qualification (I'm considering only local university options)?

Anyone with experience or have heard of someone else's experience on this topic, would really love to hear from you :)

My daughter on the other hand did her Year 12 and 13 (A-Levels) from Cambridge International School Dubai. The difference was that she was unsure which university she wanted to get into. Because she completed her final HS years, she was able to apply to 8 universities and got acceptance offers for 5 of them. But Foundation Studies pretty much locks in the student to that one university for at least one year. Your son can still transfer to a different university if he wants to, when he's managed to secure enough first year transferable credits at uni. My own son did that. Once he got enough class credits at Birmingham, he used the credits to transfer to American University of Sharjah. So Foundation isn't a complete lock :'>

My son graduated w/ only his IGCSE/GCSEs last year, and he got into a Foundation Course at the University of Birmingham in Dubai. Foundation Degree, Foundation Studies, Integrated Foundation, Foundation Year... they all come in different names but they're all essentially pretty much the same thing. I'd recommend your son doing a Foundation Course if he's very sure of what he wants to take and will be dedicated to staying in that same university for at least one year! Like lordvoldemort said, the Foundation studies is only valid for the university he's taking it in. So if he does Foundation at the University of Birmingham, he must continue his first year of undergrad studies at the University of Birmingham.

No problemo! :) I did my Foundation Studies at Murdoch University, completed it, then went straight into my undergrad for Computer Science. Foundation Studies is a programme that will consist of classes and exams. These classes are like a bridge to gap between highschool and uni studies. If your son takes such a programme, they actually vary depending on the student - he'll need to learn the very basics of uni skills and maybe even the basic knowledge of his future university course. For example, since I did IT for my bachelor's, in my Foundation Studies I had to take classes in Computational Mathematics, University Essay Writing, Critical Thinking, Foundations of Computer Science, Business Technology etc. Btw, Foundation Studies are ONLY valid for the university it's being taught at. So let's say your son decides to take up Foundation Studies at Heriott Watt University, his Foundation Studies will only be valid if he continues his university education at Heriott Watt after completing it.

Hi Dear, thank you so much for responding, this information is really really helpful. May I ask which university did you complete your Foundation Studies? What do these studies consist of, are there examinations involved? Not familiar with that hence the naive questions :) Would love to hear from others who joined University after Year 11. Seems like a good plan to me, I wonder if other people have done the same. Thank you!!

Hi Laila_E! I graduated with only my IGCSEs in Dubai in 2015 (I didn't go to A-Levels) and went straight to university in Dubai, but not directly into first year of university. It honestly depends on which UAE-based university he goes into. If it's an Aussie or UK curriculum university, your son will need to complete his Foundation Studies to make up for not completing A-Levels. His Foundation Studies can take between 6 months - 1 year to complete. But when he successfully completes it, he'll go straight to his first year of uni. So basically I graduated Year 11 IGCSEs, took my Foundation Studies in Dubai and got into an Austalian uni after 6 months. You'll have to look at universities that do Foundation Studies as most *DO NOT* accept just IGCSEs anymore. I know that schools like Murdoch University, Middlesex University, Willonggong University, and Heriot Watt University do Foundation Studies. All the best to your son! :)
