I usually use the Activia Laban (comes in 250ml, 500ml and 1l bottles). Its less salty and thinner.

1 cup of milk plus one tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar, stir it in, leave it for 10+ minutes and then stir again and you have buttermilk. You can also buy laban (the one in the milk section) as an approximation - it's a bit thicker but really nice when a recipe calls for buttermilk. Thank u so much. The Laban u mean the small cartons that say Laban up or any other type as long as it is Laban?

I wanted to make Red Velvet cupcake but the recipe calls for buttermilk. I don't know where to get that from. Can I make this at home? TIA
