Don't hand over any money until you have the registration put into your name. In Dubai a car cannot be renewed/transferred etc without fines being cleared first. When you agree on the price, you must ask if they are giving you the remainder of the insurance with it. Txs VP - We just sold our car so I understand that you hand over the money at the RTA when the transfer is done. My main concern is checking to see if it's still financed - in Oz if you buy a car with money still owing then that finance becomes your responsibility. How do I check this here? Long, they will not transfer it unless the owner has a clearance from the bank regarding the loan, and if you were taking over the loan then the bank would need pd cheques from you, plus signed documents. How does the RTA know which cars are financed? Do banks notify them when they finance a car? Our first car was lease to buy so we a little inexperienced. edited by long on 29/03/2011

The RTA will do a basic test on the car to see if it is roadworthy. You could always get your own independent test done at a garage if you feel this would make you happier about buying second-hand. The RTA will know if there is any outstanding finance on it, also fines. All parties go to the RTA traffic department to transfer the registration. If the current owner is transferring the insurance to you, make sure it has at least six months to run. If not, you must arrange your own insurance before transfer. We have always used AXA. Always take passport with residency visa in, plus any other document you think the traffic dept. may want to see. Good luck ! edited by amelia on 29/03/2011

Ladies, We will be in the market for a used car in the next few months and I want to understand the process. At home there is a website to check if the car is still financed/stolen/outstanding fines etc. What is the procedure for buying a car and what checks we should do - I don't to get left with other people’s problems. TIA.
