My car is a Honda CRV only 50K , 3 1/2 years old, I drive nice, never speeding or rough breaking. I bought the car brand new but I was told by the dealer that it is time to change the tyres. I thought they are supposed to last longer. how often have you changed your car tyres?

We should always prefer long lasting tyres for our vehicles so that there is no requirement to replace them too frequently. That's why my choice is Michelin tyres as they are the most durable ones as compared to other brands.

"Tyres will expire five years after the date of manufacture." We priced up some new tyres the other day and asked about the manufacturing date on them "2010", so under the new rules, even though they are new tyres, in the eyes of the "law" they are already 2 years old ! therefore they would only be "valid" for 3 years.

we have ford edge and it was recommended to change after 60 k irrespective of years...so we did changed then only. The company personnel told us that due to heat and speed of the roads here tyres should always be changed when recommended by the company or the mechanic to prevent bursting of the tyres. edited by manubhadauria on 27/02/2012 I only have 17K miles on the clock to it's upsetting to have to replace them due to the age - they have sat in a garage showroom for the first 2 years of theor life as it is an ex-demonstrator.:( edited by jillp on 29/02/2012 this is making me think, that I will check tyre age when my next car purchase comes around, as it could be a negotiating point, they are not cheap to replace on some car models

We recently bought a new car (yeah we didn't realize we were moving). We had all the tires changed just because we didn't know what the car had been through before it go to us. A bit expensive, but my hubby is a safety man and the cost was less compared to what our lives are worth.

I agree that it would be awful to have a blow out - but what I mean is that the car wasn't in the heat for 2 years as it sat in a garage showroom and therefore shouldn't have that problem, yet that isn't taken into account. I do take safety seriously, but just think that there should be exceptions to the rule in certain circumstances.

It's also the heat here which will have an impact on the life of your tyres.

this is how you tell the age of the tyre http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/techpage.jsp?techid=11 just checked mine and all four have code 4708, which means tyre made in 47th week, of year 2008 - so looks like I will need 4 new ones before re-registration of my vehicle However it does not account for the wearing and the tread depth, which should be checked on each service <em>edited by loube on 27/02/2012</em>

I had the same query not long ago and found that it is the law here to change you rtyres every three years regardless of the tread depth. http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=168651

They could be right. There is a lot of information on the side wall of a tyre, and some of that gives the date of manufacture of the tyre. This is checked during the registration process and your car will fail if your tyres are over 4 (4?) years old.
