Hi there

Hubbie and I are thinking of having a week in SA over Christmas, probably in Capetown or Stellenboch/Franschoek (sp?) but we weren't sure if it's the sort of place that welcomes tourists at that time or shuts down. Sorry, if that's a silly question, but we spent a week in New Zealand once off season and couldn't get a reservation at a restaurant after 7pm. It was really really sleepy. And we also spent a holiday weekend in Durban once and couldn't find anything open. I'm just unsure.

Any advice would be really gratefully received.

FFx

It's the summer holidays! Hardly the off-season. High season and good weather. If you want to go you have to start booking now. If you never had Christmas in summer on the beach: I can recommend it.

Its the main holiday season for South Africans as its end of schools/ college terms and official office / bank holidays. Its our 'high' season and very festive. Its hopping and beaches quite busy but not jammed or uncomfortable but really good energy. The flights and hotels are at their priciest though but make sure you book through a co.za website to get more 'local' prices. Its hot and sunny - around 30 degrees and everything is open. Open air Jazz festivals in the Parks, and the very famous Carols by Candlelight in the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens where thousands of locals bring picnic baskets and sing while the sun sets. Lots going on at that time !
