I would say no! It’s just not worth the risk, maybe the odds are low of you being the victim but if you are – there’s no coming back from that! I am cautious by nature of walking at night since my mum instilled this in us all from being young (we lived in an area with a high crime rate). I had a very close encounter recently in the Marina of all place, and if it can happen there…… Basically I’d decided to leave a bar earlier than my friends as I had work the next day, I was waiting in the taxi queue when three men tried to bundle me in their car. There were not that many people around but I thought I was safe as I was waiting outside a hotel (!!), the valet guys just watched in fascination as I struggled and it took two British guys who happened to walk out at that time to ‘save’ me and see me safely home. When I told my friends I was shocked at the amount of stories everyone had of this happening to people they know…..and believe me I was one of the lucky ones. Apparently, pulling girls into cars is a familiar trick and I’m sure you can guess what happens next! These stories never make it to public knowledge though but it’s scary how much they happen!! OMG Kacey, that's awful. I was so ignorant about these issues here til now. And in marina of all places!!! Can't believe the valet guy just watched. How awful!! Glad you were saved.

We hear very little of what really happens. There is so much more happening than we read in the papers. Very true! Many different safe personal experiences can be read on this thread, doesn't mean the area is safe at all.

Depends what you mean by "is it safe"? Will they get mugged? Probably not. Will they get constant stares, verbally harassment, guys following them etc - well, yes they will. I unfortunately had to head to Bur Dubai recently, in the middle of the day, walking along Bank Street. Lost count of the amount of times someone passing said in a low hushed voice "hey baby" LOL - and I'm far from 18 and attractive ;) The creek area at night is full of men sitting in groups or solo. Deira is heaving with prostitution and dodgy dealings. My advice is, don't let them go by themselves at least. edited by Pomegranate on 31/01/2011 I must be way past my use by date!!!-have lived in Bur Dubai 6 years and have honestly never once heard such comments!

I really believe you can unsafe at anywhere at anytime. You just have to be unlucky. No one can say that that area is 100% safe. Like someone said previously, it only takes 1 or 2 undesirable's to cross your daughter's path. Wrong place, wrong time.

I often wander down the Creek alone as late as 11pm and have never had any issues at all-mind you I am neither young not attractive but have always found the atmosphere down there comfortable. perhaps the trick is to not look too conspicuous and certainly dress conservatively. I think many of the men you see down there are just out to enjoy the cool night air and escape from crowded apartment blocks and of course to play cricket on every available spare blade of grass. They will get a little more attention in Karama but it seems to be good natured bantering as much as anything

I think it depends what you mean by "at night" as it gets dark early here so could mean anything from 6.30pm to 2am. I would say that these areas are fine up to about 9.30-10pm, when shops start closing / shopping crowds thin out. I have been a number of times in the evenings but have never really stayed much later than that - once the shops shut, I'm not sure that there is much attraction in roaming around the streets! I've never felt unsafe while there. Yes, they will be stared at but as long as they are sensible and are aware of their surroundings (eg keep an eye on bags, wear appropriate clothing so as not to attract attention, stick to busy main streets etc, know where they are and how to get where they are going) they should be fine. It depends how streetwise they are generally. In comparison to other places I have lived, I find Dubai a pretty safe city - but that can mean that people are a bit complacent and not as alert as they might be if living elsewhere. At 18 many teenagers are heading off round the world on gap years or heading to university to live alone, so a trip to the creek is fairly tame by comparison. That said, what is acceptable for you / your daughter is specific to your family.

Well said SM, the goings on in those areas are hardly an exaggeration as some people unfortunately seem to naively believe! ;)

Why would these young girls want to hang out down there? I don't get it...don't they have enough to do with school/College or other things? Is it because it is the cool weather and they want to enjoy it? Is it to "absorb local culture"? Please don't think I am looking to knock this but it is not something that I would allow them to do. What are they looking to gain from this? I was talking to someone from the Consulate recently and she said that you would never allow your daughter out in a taxi here if you heard some of the cases that come to them. It doesn't all make the press or the outside world. If it is "local flavour" they want then I would go with them and let's see how long that enthusiasm lasts or there are safer alternatives...if it is the cool air they want to enjoy then let them get out on a sports field. You don't say their nationality but whatever, they are going to appear as if they are girls whose parents don't care about what they do or ones who live a "different life" to the men who live down there. I could say don't they have a few guy friends who would go with them but that situation can lead to unpleasantness too. If anything were to happen, well you would get little sympathy! You only have to read the letter in 7 Days today regarding the girl who fell out of the window to see the attitudes of some people here towards parental children relationships. edited by spongemonkey on 01/02/2011

I would normally say its quite safe here, but wouldnt let my DD walk about in certain areas at night, ie Bur Dubai, Karama etc. I would advise If they do head up there at any time in the day to make sure they are fully clothed and not showing any flesh. I lived in Bur Dubai for about 6 weeks, and Im no spring chicken, the looks and stares are unbelieveable, and this was in the day time.

Hi Taffy, Please don't let them go without you or the parents of her friend I think the place is great in appearance but it's dangerous and young ladies shouldn't be alone by themselves there, even if they are around eighteen years old, during the day and during the evening

Thanks for all that. I think that it is most likely that they would be unharmed, but it creeps me out to think of them folllowed and goggled even more so then in daylight hours, and they attract heaps of attention even then!

I go to a hairdresser in karama who has also lived in that neighbourhood for 15 years. She has teenage girls and told me that they do not go out after 10pm in Karama. She said it is safe until the stores clsoe @ 10pm and then women should not be out alone.

why don't you offer to go with them ? You could let them wander on their own and arrange to meet up for a drink at various points along the way...

Seriously I wouldn't want my 2 attractive teenage daughters wandering round there at night alone! Yes I have always felt safe there, but it's like anywhere, it only takes one or two dubious characters and god knows what! Don't let them go alone!

its fine and dandy. especially now, they should go for sure as its DSF and the whole area is flocked with tourists. Most seem to be Russian tourists, but i was there at 10pm and can say there was a heavy mix. Lots of women too in the cafes a long Al Rigga St. No issues, or worries. This DSF ends 20th Feb. edited by Dxb.Fairy on 31/01/2011

I go to the Creek a lot and have never felt unsafe. Yes,you get stared at but thats Dubai. It is safe there. Some people really exaggerate here! I only ever went to the Creek/souks at night. Often only with one other female friend. Should I feel insulted that I never once felt uncomfortable or unsafe? I honestly didn't feel any more 'stared at' than on a school afternoon with the three children in MCC!

They might feel a bit more comfortable on the Karama side. Especially now with DSF going on, lots of people/visitors walking around and watching fireworks at 8:30pm every night. The Deira side is a bit creepier especially with two pretty girls, I am sure they will get a lot of curious as well as creepy stares. I personally wouldn't go to the Deira side at night even though I am long in the tooth, as I think they just like to stare, so it is an uncomfortable feeling!

I would say it's relatively safe at least if they walk on main roads with cars and other walkers there, but they will get lots of stares. Some men could even try to approach them but just tell the girls to ignore and continue walking.

My 18 year old daughter and her 19 year old friend, both very attractive girls, want to walk around the Creek and Diera and Karama at night by themselves. Is it safe?
