Thanks in advance :) Hi Dubai2003, We're moving to Dubai at the end of August and will be looking to buy a car - we're hoping for a 4x4. What car do you have? I don't blame you for looking forward to the green scenery of Scotland, it's so beautiful there! I'm already looking forward to coming back to England for a snowy Christmas and I haven't even gone yet!

Yes, definitely make sure anything you sell is cash only. :)

Just on selling stuff, we are packing up to leave now and we sold 2 cars and various furniture - took about 2 weeks altogether. You can sell in days if you're not too fussy on prices. Also once deal is done on car it happens v quickly on both we sold in the eve and did the de-registration/ handover first thing the next morning - we only considered cash buyers though. Couldn't believe how easy it was. Getting the rebate on insurance takes about a week. The only bits I'm having trouble selling are baby -related, the furniture/white goods go quick so you shouldn't have any issues. Edited to add - we sold everything through Dubizzle and the notice board at Spinneys... Good luck! edited by workingmum on 16/07/2011

Just going through this: DEWA - can cancel up to 2 weeks before you want your final bill. Collect final bill on the day you move out of accomm (if you don't want to stay in a hotel b4) and pay final bill, as water/elec can be cut off within 2 hours! Receive deposit money in cash 4-5 days after at DEWA offices (or give letter of authorization to a friend to collect money on your behalf). You will need final bill to give landlord so you can get your deposit back. You are supposed to hand the keys back and LL will give you your security deposit back (minus any deductions he/she wants to make). DU - I will hand decoders just before the end of the monthly payment period and they will give me my deposit back up to 6 weeks later through DH's bank account, as he pays by Direct Debit. They didn't tell us we needed to give a notice period as such, but you may have penalties if you haven't been signed up to certain packages for the min. qualifying period. SHIPPING - as soon as poss so that they can get someone round to give you a quote - most will want to visit to see how much stuff you have, so they can judge what size container you need. They get busy over the summer, so best to make a decision of what company you are using asap and book your packing up/taking away of your belongings date. CAR - well a colleague of DH's sold his 2 cars within days in AD - but I would sell mine asap and rent a hire car for the remaining time I am here. We will take our car to Doha. so haven't sold a car myself.

Ah Scotland, I just came back two weeks ago, it rained and rained and rained, lol. I do love the rain, just the cold I struggle with, wearing my ski jacket in summer is rather emabarassing. People arrive at this time as well as leave, and going by Ikea last week there are plenty of them. Again, I would advertise and where possible negotiate dates for selling your items, if you have to sit on the floor for a few weeks then so be it, I know we did when we arrived here. Better that than being left not being able to sell. :)

Thanks Saltire I am so happy:0) Our time in Dubai has been good for the most part it is just for me to be honest it is enough now and glad to be heading for new adventures:0). Home is sunny Scotland:0). Miss the green and the rain and our family:0) I think you are right to get the car advertised asap. Don't have a date as yet fixed so was just wondering if with it being summer here we would struggle to sell stuff? :)

You sound happy about that, have you not enjoyed your time here? Packing depends on how much you are taking back, ie. will you need a container? Also, how much notice do you need to give employers, assuming you haven't already done so. I would advertise cars straight away with a date when they will be available. Where is home? Good luck. :)
