Driving From Dubai to Doha

Good news, we're moving to Doha for my hubby's new job. Now, what I just found out yesterday is that we can drive there. This means that we can keep our car and just transfer the papers to Qatar. What I'd love to know is, have any of you done the drive either from Dubai to Doha or the reverse?

I know that for the Saudi part, I need to cover and I'm not allowed to drive, and that gas is dirt cheap. ;) How easy or difficult is it to do? Paperwork / visa wise? And are there any interesting sights to see along the way? I want to do this as an adventure as we would probably only have this one chance.

Thanks for any help.

Wow, 13 replies in about as many minutes! I was looking on the net to find out about driving from Dubai to Doha and I found this thread: http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=71325 So three's a bit of confusion about plates and the Saudi border can be backed up? That's a bit discouraging. :( But they were not driving the car on that thread. We got our car transported on a car transporter by Aramex in the end. Had to get Bill of Sale and shipment export manifest from Al Tayer as it had been a brand new car and these docs proved import tax had already been paid, otherwise you have to pay tax on entry into Qatar. Then took car to RTA to the export papers and certificate. Gave Aramex an NOC (must be in Arabic with VIN number etc on it) to show they had permission to transport the car. Then took car and paperwork to Aramex depot and waited about 10 days before it showed up in Doha. Cost of all this was about 10000 Qatar Riyals (same amount in UAE dirhams). Two points to note you must own the car 100% - i.e. not have a bank/car loan and it has to be under 5 years old or you can't leave UAE. CB edited by CheekyB on 17/02/2011

Yes, I have transported my car from Dubai to Doha recently. I mean in May 2010. The vehicle has to be less then 5 years old.Even a day less then 5 years is good enough. Better get a custom duty letter from the Dubai based Car dealer if you bought it from the showroom. This will save you Custom Duty at Doha entry point. I got the vehicle moved from Dubai to Doha by road, on the Car Carrier Truck. Is cost me AED 3700/- plus around AED 500 for registration and documentation in Doha. The shipping guys were efficient and did a good job to keep me informed about the status regularly - Daily by phone. Transit time by road is 7 days as the delay is at Saudi Border. Found this on another forum.

maybe they can just drive the car over before cancelling visas etc, then carry the number plates and reg back with them to traffic dept to collect the export plates (unnessecary ones lol) Well here we had to have our residence in place before we could export, there is a LOT of paperwork to do in the car, customs, insurance, cert of export/import etc

I am assuming the car will have export plates on it, and this means it cannot be driven but must be transported. Arh this is how we got to plates, maybe just export paperwork then not plates.

In Dubai you're not supposed to drive a car with export plates - it has to be transported http://www.dubaifaqs.com/car-registration-dubai.php (same rules for AD and Qatar) When was that? To export you have to drive the car then when it arrives here you have to take it straight to RTA place and get plates changed. So your not driving it around your driving it in and straight to RTA. (HTMS)

Just put the car on a pickup and send it over. then you can fly and not worry about it. We have done the drive, but since we do not need visas/road permits etc it is a breeze. I doubt you will find that. No because they are exporting as well, you need so much stuff!NO what? no pickup? No they wouldn't find it a breeze because they are exporting, we imported into Dubai through Saudi, NOT FUN.

Get a price to ship the car from Dubai to Doha, it may well save you in the long run.

The Saudi border can be backed right up and you need to be an Arabic speaker.
