Here's the situation. I mentioned I need to get a cabinet for my baby's room. A colleague who overheard me decided to add in his two cents. "O my God! Your poor baby sleeps alone? How could you? What kind of a mother are you? I would never let my wife do that. In our culture this is unheard of. I think you don't love your baby. " I have no idea whether I should be thoroughly ****** off or laugh.....Ps: I belong to the same "culture" as this colleague. My comeback.... "Oh I'm so sorry you can't afford a place with an extra room for your baby. What kind of childhood will he/she have growing up?"

I never get these comments from salon girls or any other rude comments. If I were you ladies, I'd tell these girls to their faces what you think. You don't have to accept this!

I can't say that I've ever noticed being insulted but as a Northerner I have a failry thick skin so probably wouldn't notice anyway! It does work both ways though...one of my junior colleagues ahs just come back from the UK and he told me he was shocked by the number of women who had chikdren when they weren't married. He wnet on to tell me he had told so and so this was very wrong and that she should have been a bride first. Surprised he survived!

It’s the opposite……I get judged as I am a working mom…my favorite come back is ….”would you like to pay me a salary for staying at home to help with expenses?”….and with the mam you fat mam big thigh “ I just say yes and laugh it off” ..in the end just take it with a pinch of salt, give it right back or shrug it off……

I felt unconformable to be called "Sexy". I think the worse insults are probably said in their native language. I would prefer to have no chit-chat in any language. It's meant to be relaxing to go to a spa/hairdresser. stare at your phone ! Thats what I do edited by mushypeas on 15/05/2013 Oh yes, phone and magazines but it doesn't always do the the trick!

I'm not great at thinking of snappy comebacks on the spot and find it hard to be rude but it's time to answer these people back! My dh thinks on his feet and always manages a great comeback. He says these rude people say things because they are allowed o get away with them. . Which is why they tend to target western and some Asian expats, they rarely "offer" such comments to those more likely to kick up a fuss True. They would never even try such a thing with an Arabic woman because they know they will get it back 100 times worse if not fired.

Usually able to shrug it off but if peeved will ask, "What did you say?" in a polite tone of voice and, should they repeat themselves, "I THOUGHT that was what you said." and then proceed to ignore it (and usually them). edited by marycatherine on 15/05/2013

Lol! This reminds me when I went to Dragon mart and the sales girl tried to sell slimming products to me because 'you very fat'. I was 5 months pregnant. edited by Asti on 15/05/2013

Love this thread! If one more person tells me how terrible it is that I only have one child, I might not be responsible for my actions! It's usually the beauty salon ladies, in horrified voice, 'but Ma'am, only one baby? There is actually another reason for such comments. Life for many of them means popping out a baby at 17 or 18 with the father either running away or being drunk. So many such girls have to travel abroad and send money back home, to their kids and sometime to the same drunk fathers or brothers. They may think that if someone has a stable home, why they should only have 1 child. Even then it is very rude and they know it quite well.

It's usually the beauty salon ladies, in horrified voice, 'but Ma'am, only one baby? I would love some witty comebacks but fear they would be lost. Partly because the humour might get lost in translation but also I suspect these people have no idea how to speak to people nicely! Speak in their language; For e.g. the comment above would receive a t of : "Me have 1 husband, so 1 baby, maybe you marry 5 time" And they have the gall to claim how they are the best English speakers around.... ! Its rude, but they deserve it, particularly for some of the comments when someone does not have a baby.

I hate the culture card in these situations. I just tell people they're rude, because in "my culture", they [i'>are[/i'> being rude with those comments. Too bad if it makes them uncomfortable. Better them than me.

Love this thread! If one more person tells me how terrible it is that I only have one child, I might not be responsible for my actions! It's usually the beauty salon ladies, in horrified voice, 'but Ma'am, only one baby? That's bad! You are cruel!' and also the upper lip question - 'Ma'am, you look like a man!' and my husband frequently gets comments on his weight, 'oh, you are soooo fat, hahahaha' and the following week they will take him out for a curry because he 'needs feeding, your wife doesn't feed you'. Also, things like 'you don't go to work?' and I feel like I shouldn't have to justify anything but it's tempting to give them the facts, but then they lose interest... I would love some witty comebacks but fear they would be lost. Partly because the humour might get lost in translation but also I suspect these people have no idea how to speak to people nicely!

I don't think you need a witty reply, especially if like me you aren't a genius with words! People know full well what they are saying and how it will be received. When I've been on the receiving end on a rude comment and always say 'Don't be so rude' and not with a smile. edited by Daza on 15/05/2013 Much much much more fun to make them squirm and try and dig themselves out of a hole.........

Just plaster a fake smile and say it........ and then wait and watch the shock appear....... Some little biatch in boots tapped me on the shoulder and asked if i wanted teeth whitening toothpaste while i was paying for something .......... she got a "really, you think my teeth are dirty" - absolutely loved watching her squirm out of that one.

no help but my favourite Churchill reply has to be to a woman who said "if you were my husband i'd poison your soup" - "Madam, if you were my wife i'd drink it"..... :D or something like that... lol

Churchill was a genius with words,as well as in many other areas. It's having the guts to actually say what you're thinking too. One of my fav quotes of his is "when you're going through he'll, just keep going"

He says these rude people say things because they are allowed o get away with them. When in need to just think of Churchill - when a woman comment on how drunk he was he replied along the lines of "but Madam, in the morning i shall be sober, you however will still be ugly"

I'm a particular fan of being told without fail when having my eyebrows thread, "loong time, madam!" Or, "you've been plucking them Madame, I can tell"- like it's a deadly sin. I'm not great at thinking of snappy comebacks on the spot and find it hard to be rude but it's time to answer these people back! My dh thinks on his feet and always manages a great comeback. He says these rude people say things because they are allowed o get away with them. Ladies let's start a sea change ! We'll build up a repertoire of good replies that we know by rote so can be said without having to think and that are general enough to shoot back in most situations. Like "are you always this rude" or "are you trying to be rude" Your suggestions please.

This is one major difference in culture and many a times I stood there gobsmacked with the comments my colleagues made like "what's the matter with you, why do you have this big pimple?" or " "you are looking fat" followed a week later by "I don't think you are eating enough" and the list goes on and on and on.... sometime I just wish people would adapt the "How are you" way rather than say those kind of things. I am tough skinned but it sometimes annoys even me when having a bad day so I can only imagine what it might do to someone who is much more sensitive than me.
