We have a cat and adopted a kitten about six months ago. They have become the best of friends, but the little one can be a bit naughty.

We live in an apartment and she adores uprooting my pot plants on the balcony, thus spraying dirt and flowers everywhere and then jumping on the (white!) sofa to rub the aforementioned dirt all over it.

She also delights in ripping off the heads of of flowers in a vase. How can I stop her? I spray her with a water bottle when I catch her, but I work during the day and would prefer not to hide all the flowers whenever I go to work... She has loads of toys to play with, plus the other cat to entertain her so I don't know that it's boredom as she does it when I'm home as well...

Hi ladies, Thank you for all of your helpful suggestions! I really appreciate all of the ideas. Hotpot – don’t worry, I did check that these plants and flowers were safe before bringing them in but thanks for checking. Unfortunately, the little one found the foil and stones combination very intriguing and delighted in ripping it up and wrestling the stones out of the pots and then pushing them around, the cheeky little thing. She did make me chuckle at her determination though… I did a search through some other topics on this forum though, and tried Pinkpea’s suggestion of spraying vinegar near the area. I think the vinegar idea is to keep cats from weeing on the sofa, but it seems to also work in keeping them away from pot plants! I just spray it on the ground near the plants each day, and lo and behold the flowers are intact! Although today is my first day at work, so who knows what the two cats will get up to while I am gone during the day… Stay tuned! edited by Water baby on 20/03/2011

Get a fern - Garfield seems to enjoy them as much as flowers, maybe it'll distract your kitty! [url=http://www.mezzacotta.net/garfield/?comic=4'>link[/url'>

We don't have any plants inside for this reason too and as for a beautiful bouquet of flowers from my Dh.......forget it! Alot of plants and flowers are poisonous to pets too.

OK if you're not home, can you put plants in a room you can close the door (and keep kitty out)? Problem partially solved - you will still have to water spray her if she persists. Put a styrofoam plate (holes cut appopriately) over the top of the pot. Use largish stones (maybe 3- 6 cm in diameter) at the top of the pots. Get kitty a kitty friend, but this can backfire with 2 kitties emptying the plant pots GOOD LUCK

put tin foil to cover the dirt in the post and cover with some stone to hold it down...oh, poke holes in it for water :) flower heads bounce. You might just have to eat this one and stop with the flowers until she is 6 months older :) not a hardship or put them where she cant get them :)
