How do you improve the air quality in your home?

Hi, Ladies. I have a toddler who seems to be constantly fighting a cold and I am having allergic reactions to house dust. I was searching for air purifiers but i am not sure which one really works. I don't mind buying expensive if it does the job but I will be very upset to buy just another thing which promises the earth but does nothing but collecting dust..on top of it :)
Then what about humidifiers? I think I need one of those, too.
Thanks.

Thank you for all ur replies! I am in complete fog about the AC system but DH says that most of the buildings in Dubai and the new ones in Abu Dhabi ( we are in the new towers on the Reem Island- Abu Dhabi) run on chilled water and yes, there is the auto button. I don't have the AC on during winter here. So there is a plan: 1. Clean the AC filters ( have to ask the building maintanance about their schedual on this) 2. Try my hand on the house plants. I new about NASA study but somehow house plants are intimidating me, I don't know if I am able to take good care of them :( 3. Buy the air purifier. IQ Air is sold in the UAE. I will see if I will go for it or other one. 4. Up vitamin D for my DD by sun exposure. I will take your word for it Icecat :) It is a good idea all around anyway. Anything else we can think about? I would love our home to be as safe as we can make it.

Not arguing w/you, IAMVP, but it could be different issues. I totally agree that stuff blowing around is not good. By running HEPA filters 24/7, I have nothing to get blown around. When the AC is on, it's simply an additional filter.

DS had horrible chest problems from birth, and it was all due to the chilled air con.....when he was 18 months old we moved into our own house, and made sure that we had 'proper' air conditioning, which cuts in and out, and the change in him was immediate. The fan blowing constantly just blows everything around.....and dries out nasal passages

Good on you, mpenny101! I wasn't about to bring up the benefit of plants because most allergists will tell you to get rid of them immediately. I have a few large ones, including a rubber tree. To minimize any mold/fungi from the soil, I have decorative rocks atop the soil. This will not eliminate mold/fungi, but it can help to keep it to a minimum. Plants are not the fix, HEPA filters are not the fix, there is no single fix; it is a matter of addressing the issue from all sides ... or so is my experience which has met with a degree of success.

My AC runs off chilled water and that's not really a problem ... nor do i think that is the problem of many who suffer from severe allergies. AC filters must be kept clean, but, actually, running them non-stop is more beneficial for an allergy sufferer because that constantly runs the air through the filter, thereby trapping impurities such as dust, dust mites, mold spores &tc. I've had my AC off the past week and the balcony doors open, but I never ever turn off my HEPA filters.

I've been reading up on houseplants recently, and it's so obvious but I just didn't even think of it! NASA did a study and certain plants very effectively cleanse the air, whilst introducing more oxygen. I have even read that some plants like the rubber plant will humidify the air. Many of these plants are easy to get hold of in Dubai, ie. the peace lily, rubber plants, spider plants and snake plants. To be honest any house plant is going to promote better air quality in your home. Also, as bedroom air is arguably the most important air for allergy sufferers, succulents like cacti and money plants or jade plants actually release oxygen at night rather than the day making them really useful for a bedroom. I know feng shui followers will choke, but it's true, and the handy thing is there are plenty of succulents on sale in Dubai that don't have prickly thorns to assuage negative energy fears. Just to add be careful about poisonous plants, I read conflicting info and would basically make sure all plants are out of a child's reach to be on the safe side. edited by mpenny101 on 13/11/2011

If your air conditioner runs off chilled water then you will have these problems. When the A/C goes off, does the fan keep on blowing? Only on/off switch and no auto? This will be your problem.

I don't use a humidifier, but I do use HEPA air filters. I have horrid allergies and the HEPA filters definitely help. The brand I am using here is Filtrete and I'm pleased w/their performance. We purchased them here. I have smaller ones in the bedrooms, larger in the living areas. You must be sure to have adequate systems to meet the size of your environment. They are not too loud, which is good, some are awfully loud. I find these are quite effective in my environment -- and I have cats, one of which I'm allergic to. My AC filters are cleaned by maintenance in my building every three months, which is reasonable. If that is not done for you, you should do it yourself on a regular basis and be sure to use high quality filters. You are doing well to minimize cleaning chemicals. They can be the worst for allergies. Try to use only fragrance-free products. My allergies are bad, my daughter's were 100 times worse. I have been through every avenue and approach to minimize and/or treat reactions. An odd suggestion, but it is often effective; increase your son's Vitamin D preferably by additional sun exposure. As little as ten minutes a day may help -- but no sunscreen as that defeats the purpose.

Remember also to clean the air filter of a.c., on my opinion the best is remove it and clean it with the compressed air pump (at the petrol station for example) and then with water
