Hello ladies, for the last couple of weeks I have been debating whether to send my child to a nursery rather than start FS1 at big school as being a June born child she would be one of the youngest and I thought the routine would be more relaxed.

I toured/saw four nurseries in my area and to be honest I cant find a single difference between the big school version and the nursery. For those parents who chose to send your child to a nursery rather than FS1 what were the benefits or reasons you saw for your child that I might be overlooking.

Instead of a 7:30 start, they have an 8 am start (apart from one nursery that started at 8:30. They have to be in till 12:30, have a set curriculum to follow and must be in five days a week. There's the usual - the five areas they concentrate on, Arabic/French, swimming etc... similar class sizes with the same adult to child ratio.

Its a British curriculum and if they really followed the UK method, would a 3 year old in nursery there be expected to follow a proper curriculum five days a week? One nursery said I could choose to send her 3 or 4 times weekly but they would not be able to give a certificate stating she has completed the entire course! Am I just looking at the wrong nurseries?

I thought it would be a more relaxed thing where the child can come in 3 or 4 days a week for a few hours. That said, the Children's Garden did offer that schedule but they are following the IB system and according to them she would be one level below FS1 or the nursery equivalent.

I am quite confused at this point and not sure if I should let her get on with FS1, the one she is meant to go is closed off from the rest of the school, and after touring the nursery, structure wise also I don't see much difference. Am I missing something?

I've had many friends keep their children in Nursery for FS1 and it has really worked for them which is why I will be doing the same for my little one. He's currently at Jumeirah International Nursery - they offer an FS1 programme just like the one in the main Schools and he will be doing cooking, Arabic/French, swimming, singing, football and going on trips. I like that it gives Mark that little extra time in Nursery as, after going from home to Nursery to School within just a couple of years, it is a lot of change. I also find Schools quite daunting for children at that age as they are surrounded by bigger children and a much bigger environment. His Nursery also only allows 18 in a class maximum unlike the schools where they can range from 25-30 which means he gets more focus from his teacher. The teachers are fab and really make him feel like part of the family. I also found that it was cheaper than enrolling him in a school - trying to put off that cost as long as I can really. Definitely worth taking a look so you see what I mean - you don't feel like your child is missing out on the real experience. As for School placements the nursery issues a report for your school application and, as long as you get your application in early enough and there are no developmental concerns, you should be fine.

I only sent my child to FS1 to ensure we got into our school of choice as FS2 spots in Dubai at good schools are hard to come by. However I would rather give my money to a school than pay the extortionate fees some nurseries charge. My child has 2 friends one born in June and one in July at school and they are two of the brightest children in class. Dont underestimate the young ones. ;)

I've chosen to send my little one to big school for FS1 for the reason that i don't want her to be the odd one out next year when going in to FS2. I'm assuming that the kids will all be in the same boat getting used to the school and classmates in FS1, so have lots of support, but then when they all move up a year together, it might be more challenging for a new starter to fit in. Course, we're in dubai so there'll be lots of people joining and leaving every year, so maybe it's not a big deal....just sharing one thing that helped me to make the decision.

I think it depends on what you and your child are comfortable with and also what suits you in regards to the timings. For some children 'big school' is a but daunting and nursery is more comforting but for others it is exactly what they need! Personally, I prefer nursery as I like that the children still benefit from the same curriculum and standards but the learning is focused on play, exploring and learning to be independent. I feel nursery staff are able to offer a little more support in toilet training, separation anxiety etc. As a teacher (Aspin Nursery) I think the extra year in nursery helps to prepare the children socially and emotionally with the transition to a school environment. Good luck for your not so little one, I'm sure you'll make the right choice!

I can't say which is better for you, but for me I'm happy I kept my son in nursery for FS1 He is in 2 days 8-5 and 2 days 8-1 along with his little brother. The morning session (8-1) is spent following FS1 structure so lots of learning, hourly structure, Arabic, Art, sport etc The afternoon they do lots of play and they mix age groups. It has worked well for us, he gets to play with his brother and other mixed ages when he is in the afternoons, and in the mornings he does the curriculum based stuff. He's not behind other FS1 school children, I do things with him at home too and he can read and write whole alphabet, read 2 and some 3 letter words etc and very basic math (if you have 1 ball and I give you 2, how many?) that kind of thing. They still very much encourage independence at nursery for his class, they go to the toilet alone, open and clear away their own lunchboxes etc. It was also cheaper than paying for school, and the flexibility of the timings suit us as it works well with my part time work commitments

Thanks for the replies. I have a FS2 place for her (as told by the school) as she has an older sibling already there. They have also given me the choice to start FS1 with them or do it a nursery. Not sure what would suit her more. Hopefully someone else with a child in nursery will come along and share their experience...

Hi Redrec I can't answer from the nursery point of view but the reason I sent my children to big school for FS1 was because it was harder to get a place if waiting for FS2. I know a couple of people who were offered places for FS1 and decided to stay in nursery for another year and ended up not getting a place for FS2. If that could be the case for your little one then it might make the decision for you. This! Another reason for us for going to school rather than nursery is preparing him for school & getting used to the big school environment. I have a very sensitive child, it took him 3 months to settle although he was one of the oldest children in class (November baby) I'm not sure about other schools but at my son's school they are very flexible with KG1 students, we don't send him everyday, we don't always send him at 7.50 am, if he doesn't get enough sleep he goes to school at almost 9 am. Now the weather is too hot, we have the option to keep him at home if we want, he doesn't have to go until the end of school term which is 26th of this month. As for a certificate of completion KG1/ FS1 is not a requirement to join KG2/ FS2 here, if there is a place at school & your child passes the entry test your child will be accepted without a KG1 certificate. I might be wrong but nurseries are not regulated by the minstry of education, they are regulated by the ministry of social affairs. So their certificate is not recognised by schools I guess

I would agree with Daza, Many parents put their children into FS 1 here for the reason that they may not get a place in FS 2 or Year 1 later on as the classes will already be full. It can feel like a bit of a gamble if you don't take an FS 1 place in a school (if you are offered one). Its also a great way for the schools to get you in one year earlier and paying fees!!
