Hi ladies
we are getting ready to get our helper / nanny to work with us as live in however the room (if you can call it that) is shockingly small, I don't even know how to fit a bed and anything more. It does have own shower and toilet which is reasonable size thankfully but the room itself is tiny, are there any other ladies out there that faced similar challenges before and would you be willing to share your advise with me, or even send me picture of how you made it as pleasant room as possible for your helper? you can reach me on [email protected] or of course just post on here, very much appreciated, thanks!

Ikea also has fold up beds- they fold up in half and are on wheels. The mattress looks the same as what is on some of their other beds and it is very inexpensive.

The least you can give her is a decent place to sleep. Would you like to sleep on the floor every night? She might be a maid but she deserves to sleep comfortably! Ikea has this fold out guest bed, as well as a small soda bed, it's only a tiny 2 seater. Don't forget, she will be spending some of her day off and her evenings there. With regards to her clothing, anything that goes on the wall will work. She deserves the basics at least.. Nothing uncomfortable about a nice mattress on the floor! What is a bed base after all? It's hard and just makes the bed higher. I have had both Sri Lankan and Filapino maids and both have said that they LIKE sleeping on the floor. They had a very comfortable, brand new bed with good latex mattress that I would be happy to sleep on. I was really put out spending all that money, only to find they would still periodically sleep on the carpet, on the floor, no mattress, by choice! You can't change what they are used to. It's not a case of being " just a maid", it's a cultural thing. edited by kittycat71 on 21/10/2012

Thank you thank you Buckeyd, Daza, Marroosh and Mrsb, that is valuable information. I never heard of extendable beds either and the book case that you can hang also sounds great. I know it is not a hotel but I agree, she needs to have a decent place to sleep and spend some of her free time there. Will have a look at Ikea, thanks again ladies

We also got a bed from Ikea, it has 3 large storage drawers underneath it, but it is not a loft, just regular height. It also has a small attachment that can be hooked on either side that serves as a very small nightstand. This setup really served all purposes in one piece, and only took up the space of a twin bed.

And Ikea has book cases that you can attach to the wall rather than stand on the floor, and then you can out colourful boxes in the spaces where she can put her things. http://www.ikea.com/ae/en/catalog/products/20135300/ http://www.ikea.com/ae/en/catalog/products/00186395/ edited by Marroosh on 21/10/2012

If the length of a standard bed is a problem, Ikea has extendable beds that might work, you'd just have to make sure you got the right mattress. http://www.ikea.com/ae/en/catalog/products/S99827959/

We've got those over the over the door hanging things in our maids room. One on the back of the main door for hanging up clothes etc and one with pockets on the back of the bathroom door for storing toiletries. Both from Ikea. I also got cushions made in the same fabric as the window blind which was a small thing but our maid seemed pleased with.

In my experience, maids rooms are very small and not large enough for a bed frame - I put a mattress on the floor and a low level chest of drawers so she can use it while sitting on the floor, store her things in the drawers etc. Hanging space is not essential as things can be folded. It only becomes problematic if you have more than one girl in the small rooms. She is your maid, not a guest so decorating is not require or expected. Clean and comfortable sleeping space should be the aim.

Simple...Don't get a maid if the room is too small for human habitation.

Maybe just a mattress on the floor that she can stand up on its side when not in use. Get your DH to install a rail for hanging clothes up, or buy one of those rails with wheels. You could even hang a curtain from roof to floor to conceal the hanging clothes if you like. A small chest of drawers and a lamp. Or if you had a bed on legs, you could put storage containers under the bed. edited by kittycat71 on 21/10/2012

thank you ladies for all the advise, I will check at Ikea child section as well, sounds like a good idea too. I don't have the measurements at the moment marroosh, will have to check since I am only moving in at the end of the month, meanwhile grateful for all the suggestions

Oh that sounds really small! IKEA has these fold beds but not sure if it's really comfortable since she will probably make long days. Do you have the measurements for her room?

Tictactoe, you are going to be in for a big shock when you get your maid. She is not a guest in your house, she does not need decorations in your room or a welcome basket! She is coming to work for you and probably considers herself lucky she has a job.

The children's section at Ikea has beds that fit in small maid's room. We've got the Kura bunk bed but the other way up from the one in this picture. The mattress is on the top leaving space underneath. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10123996/

We had a loft bed (IKEA) as it had a desk on the bottom and bed up top. It depends on how comfortable your maid is with the ladder and sleeping in a loft style bed. It doubled the size of a small room with working space.

thanks marroosh, I however think that even a bunk bed won't even fit this small size room (we are living in apartment which has way smaller rooms than eg villa)

Maybe a bunk bed with space underneath for wardrobe/cupboard?
