I was just reading on here AGAIN, about how Dubai is the land of the fake fake fake and we're all fake and our hair is fake, nails are fake, boobs, butts and faces are fake, our bags are fake...presumably our lives are also fake, kids are figments of our imagination and I'm starting to doubt that that yummy smelling casserole I have going is real at all.

So who is actually REAL, and what does that mean to you? I can't find myself anywhere in the above description of dxb, or of the people who inhabit it, despite being told umpteen times that that is the real dubai. Or, how many of you actually fit that description? Where do you hang out, as Ive not had the pleasure of meeting many of these fake dubai ites that everyone assures me populate the whole emirate? where where where?

Possibly I am a figment of my own imagination....

I have lived in Dubai for eight years and I don’t think that I have become fake. Life is easier here in Dubai compared to many other countries and I don’t think enjoying this easier life would make us fake. Fake is when you pretend to be someone who are not , if you have a maid when you don’t need one , when you buy cloths , cars , shoes only for the sake of the brand name and not for the quality , or your need. I don’t buy designer cloths or hand bags, because I don’t believe in branded products, I would rather spend my money on holidays or pampering myself. (But I don’t think those who do are fake) With Dubai comes a lifestyle that we all enjoy to some extent ,but as long as we remember where we have come from and stick to our own culture and values , enjoying Dubai lifestyle does not become a crime. On the other hand there are people who over do it all. They have done so many beauty operation of themselves that they look like aliens :)) you look at them and all you see is died hair , Barbie nose , huge boobs , tattooed eyebrows , blinking jewelries and branded cloths . THAT IS FAKE

I am 100% original and after a few wines I look amazing! Actually I think the wine acts as a kind of preservative. Beauty is in the eye of the glass-holder?

no one needs much to be truly happy, but whats wrong with buying something pretty if you want it, and it doesn't hurt anyone? whats wrong with having a maid if it makes your life easier and again--isn't harming anyone? there is nothing wrong with not adding to your existing lifestyle with additional costs/luxuries if you feel you don't need them. there is also NOTHING wrong with adding a few little luxuries to your life if it doesn't cost much, and contributes significantly to your quality of life. ...i wont judge you for your un-manicured nails, but you have to be fair and not judge me for my manicured ones! well, I watched Horizon (a UK scientific programme) the other day and there's a theory that reality as we know it is just a hologram. It has something to do with how photons don't behave the way they should. Go figure... back to your holographic nails, ladies... you think maybe all this fatness is in my head?! (i love the sound of this) I love this too! as am now officially either a figment of my own imagination or a hologram, I am going to have a perfectly naughty fat laden breakfast and it won't matter a bit :D

I guess everyone has other priorities and wishes. When they want to spend their money for designer things or others - it is okay. What I don't understand is, why buying fakes so not the real thing when they can't afford it. You always should buy what you like and can afford. Everyone should create the own style. Now it seems everyone has to have some kind of fake. Fake nails, botox, fake boobs.. the list goes on and on....why not try to accept the own look and be happy... i dunno, i've never bought a fake designer good. i have bought something that looks comparable to a designer product, but it was just a good quality product that rivaled a designer good.

Just my thoughts too. In this forum most have problems with a maid, or they want one or whatever....maids maids.... I am wondering why they have kids? Did they have maids in their homecountry too? What should these kids learn from a maid, which often hardly speaks english or hasn't any education at all???? Then fakes - you are so right. It seems it is one the most important things... to have designer bag, expensive cars, designer clothes, every few days beauty salon treatment...and so on... We haven't changed at all. True is we have more money then we had back home, where we also had a good income. We now can save more then ever before, we can also buy good quality clothing. Sometimes great holiday for relaxation, because my DH is working too much. No debts at all... so we can sleep smoothly, we enjoy our time in Dubai, the great weather - especially in winter and maybe we can retire earlier than other because of our savings.... and hopefully we stay healthy. We don't need Designer clothes or whatever to be happy... no one needs much to be truly happy, but whats wrong with buying something pretty if you want it, and it doesn't hurt anyone? whats wrong with having a maid if it makes your life easier and again--isn't harming anyone? there is nothing wrong with not adding to your existing lifestyle with additional costs/luxuries if you feel you don't need them. there is also NOTHING wrong with adding a few little luxuries to your life if it doesn't cost much, and contributes significantly to your quality of life. ...i wont judge you for your un-manicured nails, but you have to be fair and not judge me for my manicured ones!

ok, I have a question. Everyone goes home and lives the life they had before dubai. A few win barrels of money and start spending it and enjoying with nice cars, nice house, housekeeper, salon visits, fine dining, great clothes.....are they now Fake? depends on how they do it and whether they still have time to enjoy the little things in life.

too many normal folk come here and lose their wholesomeness ;) i have met quite a few characters who became unrecognisable after a few months living in dubai. people get swept up in the brunch/party/grooming/4x4/sportcar/maids scene and some don't know where to draw the line. Fake people, thats 'em. to have these things are not fake. it is how these things are promoted that tells me the person is not genuine. lets face it, the handbag scene here [i'>is[/i'> ridiculous. edited by citywoman on 23/01/2011 edited by citywoman on 23/01/2011

Maybe fake isn't the right word but "real life" would be more appropriate. I don't think I've changed as a person as the saying goes "you can take the girl out of Essex but not Essex out of the girl" but what is not real is that I do have a full time nanny for my DD. In the UK that would have never happened as I wouldn't be able to afford it. Maybe I'll take the fake bit back cause I do have false lashes which I love. Anyway I'm enjoying Dubai whilst it lasts.

Oh sadly I'm totally for real, with a jelly belly to prove it. (Although my Jimmy Choo handbag does have its own chair next to my Marc Jacobs one, should I deign to turn up at the office).

Do teeth fillings and crowns class as fake? I do often encounter the 'I'm better than you attitude' here in London and I don't understand it, I was hoping that the people in Dubai were a little nicer? now if they only brought over a target, my designer shopping days would be over! I've not encountered the Mummy Mafia thing at the school gates (yet) in Dubai in the same way as in UK, maybe I'm oblivious, maybe it's cause we're all in the same boat, but people in Dubai seem nicer in general, in my limited experience. edited by Sugarbeach on 23/01/2011

I think I actually need to be fake as I NEED a boob job, bum lift, tummy tuck, lipo suction, face lift, personal trainer, nails, hair, etc and to be able to tell the difference between what a designer item is in comparison to good old Primark. Is there classes I can attend? ..i love primark! i think i'll go tomorrow. shall i pick you up anything?

I have not moved to Dubai yet. to be fair though, it's really not about the shoes or branded items. (I have a huge passion/need for really pretty things) Admittedly I do buy a lot of designer stuff, but it's only because I love it soo very much...although I don't know how anyone would ever guess it was designer unless they obsess through the look books like I do, and even if they do it doesn't often come up in conversation. Now that I do have a little boy, it's harder to wear my designer clothes and I am more often than not wearing H&M --which besides the wearable quality looks similar to my more expensive tucked away treasures. Everything looks the same if your toddler likes to throw food at you all day long. I havent changed in personality, ok maybe we are slightly spoilt, what with all the great places to eat out on a weekend, instead of lazing abut on a sofa watching TV ( in UK I mean). I've always loathed shopping, dont do pedi's and mani's much, dont go for massages, found that no one can cut my hair. I do think we live the simple life, similar to bk home, but we have a completely different approach to life when the weekends come around. If anything we dont go on holiday like we used to. Only had one holiday in 2.5 years, whereas back home we would of been away at least 6 times by now. I havent changed and people back home would say the same. I have met the odd person that sits and talks with a plum in its mouth, once afew drinks have past the mouth, out comes the kippers and curtains, lol

I believe some people would have a long way to fall if they went back to their home country (no maid, no fancy car, no weekly nail appts, designer this and that etc etc) /quote'> Since I have been here I have met some really lovely and genuine people, but equally some whose heads have been turned by the money and the availability of cheap labour. Maybe because I am older and don't have kids I can't be bothered with the Jimmy Choo competitions. I'm not saying it's wrong, I'm just saying enjoy it while you can and keep your feet (with or without Jimmys or Louboutins) firmly on the ground, it all turns on a sixpence.

...darnit! I was hoping to move to Dubai to fall into the category of absolute feminine perfection. (And i'd saved up all my money to pay for the transformation too!)
