Morning Ladies.

I am starting to look into nursery/ schools for my daugther, but since I come from South Africa where back in the day we went to school at age 7, I am now totally confused.

What is KG1 / KG2, PRE-K? At what age do they start school/nursery. I dont want to wait till she is too old. I understand you can send them to nursery 2 - 5 times a week and there they will learn things like writing their name, alphabet etc.

I think one of my biggest concerns is the fact that she is growing up in a foreign language and are not exposed to english as much. I dont want to wait too long and then she has to go to a school/nursery for the first time away from me with people talking to her in a language she doesnt understand.

Any advise whould be greatly appreciated!! We live in DSO so if you know of any good schools/nurseries that will also help.

Age for US system for schools: 3-4 y.o - Pre-K 4-5 - KG1 5-6 - KG2 UK system: 3-4 - FS1 4-5 - FS2 5-6 - Grade 1 If you are planning to give DD to nursery, then just to let you know that most of nurseries here follow British System and you can keep her there till age 4. After that you will need to put her to big school and it won't matter whether it will be UK, US or other system. I know of one nursery in DSO which is Kensington, although don't have any opinions of it. As for school, there is Gems Wellington which follows UK system. There are also several nurseries and schools in Mirdif and Garhoud.

My knowledge of schools in Dubai is limited to the American system, where Pre-K is ages 3-4. My kids never went to Nursery but instead started in Pre-K. A lot of kids in my DD's KG1 class (ages 4-5) never went to Nursery or Pre-K either. You will find that a lot of schools in Dubai have wait lists for the early years, so it would be best for you to register your child as soon as you decide which schools/nurseries you are interested in.
