hi - I have decided to make my daughters birthday cake and she wants a Gnomeo & Juliet cake (great!) - anyway I have purchased the picture for it from ebay so I just need to make a half sheet cake and ice it and stick the pic on....so does anyone know best place to get a half sheet cake pan (live in Qatar) - am thinking Tavola or Lakeland but will probably be a fortune! I also am not sure how much ingredients to use as its a big cake...any advice gratefully received! I may do a trial and may well be off to the cake shop at the last minute!

Hello Vallan, So pleased that you have the cake sorted, have fun with the decorating, hope the fondant works out well, if not you have a back up plan. I didn't have a plan "B" and when the Jack in a box cake fell apart, it was a very quick trip to the supermarket for an ice-cream cake, the kids loved it . Good Luck Shanni

Thank you Shanni - I got a tin in Carrefour which is perfect - I then went to Tavola and wish I has waited as they had some for similar price but a bit better for cakes - never mind - I did a trial and we now have a HUGE cake - have frozen half! I also found that tavola do fondant icing but its 43 QR a kilo which I thought was pricey as I will need 2 - I found a recipe for marshmallow fondant which seems easy so I am going to try that first and if it fails will buy some. Its been quite fun as normally just buy birthday cakes but sick of paying silly prices really! Thanks again for your reply.

Hello, I am not sure what a half sheet cake pan is, I think it would be similar to a slab cake, so hope I am on the right track. The supermarket at Hyatt Plaza has a good range of pans, also you could try the 7 Riyal shop at the other end of the complex, maybe home centre might be worth a try they had a limited range when I was last in, Ansaar Gallery City Centre could be another possibilty. Quantity- I would double the recipe or use two packets.... depending on how big the pan is, you can always turn the left over mix into muffins /cup cakes, the mix should come about 3/4 way up the pan. Do you have a large baking / lasagne dish you could use ? If so you could just trim the edges to give you the shape needed, just seal cut sides with icing and let it set before starting the final icing layer ( or the crumbs are a challenge) Enjoy the birthday, your daughter will love her cake.
