Did anyone take the metro to the Dubai Mall this evening? It was absolute chaos at the station and bordering on a stampede.
We decided not to venture out there and took the next train back to Nakheel Park and Ride.

There is no way I would go anyway near anything like that here with the crowds and the way people behave. Instead we walked to the end our road and watched the fireworks from there and walked home again. Sure, we would not see everything from there but enough to satisfy. :)

and....you could slip in an insulated bags with your lovely home prepared dinner lol....and your own wine of course...and you dont have to wait for a cab...just walk home to your hotel. Makes sense to me...:) Home prepared dinner??? I reckon we'd splash out on room service :-) Wine of course would come from MMI ;-) x edited by Loopy Lotti on 01/01/2011

You get great views of Burj Khalifa from so many places in Dubai - parts of Satwa, Al Barsha etc. We went to a hotel for the evening but if we hadn't I would have driven to a good spot and watched the fireworks from there as I really can't stand crowds, especially how some people in this country behave.

has anyone checked out how much a hotel room would be say split amonst 6 friends? having nothing to do at the moment, I checked lol.....you can get a hotel room, within walking distance of Kalifa for around 700dhm a night, toss in a hidabed and bring some sleeping bags and it would work lol... edited by SueB on 01/01/2011 That's a heck of a lot cheaper than our 2 fancy dress costumes + bottle of fizz to take to the party + taxi both ways!!!! Hmmmmm NYE 2012 .... bring it on at the Burj!! :-)

The best Idea if you are going to do New Years at Burj Kalifa? Rent a suite in the hotel with a few friends, have dinner brought up and sit on your balcony watching the fireworks, then you can either stay up until 4a.m. and go home or just curl up and sleep. edited by SueB on 01/01/2011 *like* Would need a lottery win or rich friends tho :-) x

The streets around Jumeirah Beach Hotel, usually gridlocked on NY Eve, were surprisingly quiet last night. Sounds live everyone was at Burj Khalifa!

Thnkfully as soon as we got out our house yesterday it was flashing on road -heavy congestion on sheikh zayed road take alternative routes. We chucked the idea of going to Dubai mall and went to the walk instead.it was beautiful there.although while returning home it took us 2hrs from marina to burdubai but we enjoyed listening to some cool songs.

Please spare a thought for all those people working last night until 5am trying to control the chaos and being totally ignored by some of the animals causing the chaos, They were really trying so hard to control the maniacs pushing and shoving others. One guy jumped over the entrance barrier and I even told him that he was so wild. He said thank you and pushed others to get out. What time did the metro finally finish? Did everyone finally get back before 2am to get the last train back? Oh I just could not stand all the madness last night.

Insane-hope you can catch up on some sleep today-can't remember it being so bad other years because there was no fireworks at burj (not even burj...) in the past years? ... :) :)[/quoten I meant the New Year's Eve traffic in general hasn't been as bad in previous years-of course choas around the Butj station was pretty much a given! However BH was trying to catch a taxi home from there before 6pm-he thought it would not be so bad then

I was at the Dubai Mall Metro Station right before midnight and it was beyond chaos!!!! I thought at any moment I could be squished or trampled to death, luckily I made it out by having to climb over a wall before midnight, I can only imagine what it was like inside when the fireworks began and everyone wanted to get near a window to see…..I will never take the metro to a major event in Dubai again, it was very scary!!!!!!!!!!!!! Then finally meeting up with my SO who was working and leaving at 2am to go home which is normally a 6 minute drive took us an hour :( not the best was to bring in the new year!!!!!!!!!! edited by calimom on 01/01/2011 We took the metro from Nakheel Park and Ride and thought what a great idea it was as we would not get stuck in traffic. This was at 9pm. By the time we got to the MoE station, the entire Gold Class carriage was packed to capacity. We quickly realised that this was not the greatest idea. When we got off the train, there were hoards of crowds from the previous trains still walking down the staircases and the escalators. They were all pushing to move forward and it seemed as though the security guards were trying to control the movement as the barriers were open. We got down finally (with stroller down the stairs because the elevator was not working as well) but then decided not to exit the station as there were huge crowds of people standing outside waiting to get into the station. They were not allowing anyone back in. So we decided to brave it out and get back up the elevator facing the oncoming crowds to get back into the next train going to Jebel Ali. We finally got back to Nakheel Park and Ride at exactly midnight so not the best way to bring in the new year but I am sure better then trying to get to see the fireworks. I don't know how those that finally got out managed to get home?

I went to bed at 1am and could see the traffic around Old Town was still gridlocked. It must have put a real dampening on the night for those stuck there. edited by Lakshmi on 01/01/2011

I didn't take the metro but I was one of those who were stuck in a car for 3 hours in traffic and then when we were close to dubai mall we found out where the traffic came from which was from the passengers from the metro crossing the street on shekh zayed road, it was chaotic.
