Hi all,

I have in the last few months been suffering from knee pain - its only when i walk up or down the stairs or sit in one place for too long that they hurt - not huge pain though just when i put pressure on them! It almost feels like my knees feel hollow and more of a joint issue for some reason.

I dont exercise at all, which I should but my diet is decent - i have lots of milk and veggies and fruits - and take fish oil and vitamin tablets everyday...not sure why the pain is triggered suddenly

My father suffers from arthritis and osteporosis (spelling?)...Should I be worried..?

Any good western doctors you can recommend me for the above who can help? any other advise on vitamins/food/exercise would also help..wat type of xrays chek ups shud i be doing for this? i dont want to be conned at the dr. or pay for unnecessary stuff.

pls help ladies -im scared that it cud b sumthin permanent:(

X-rays and blood tests if needed will be done same day depending on if your insurance allows these without approval. If an ultrasound is needed you usually have to come back for that as insurance pre approval is usually required. You will see consultant, then go for X-rays and then back to see consultant all done is one trip. Hope all goes well for you. :)

Thank you so so much ladies...this is relief to know that most of you have gone to the same doctor.. Any idea if I go for a consultation at Medcare, if the blood tests (assuming that they will check for vitamin d and other vital things) and x rays can be done on the same day or do I have to come back after the appointment?

Hi. I'm going through this with my DD at the moment. We went to Medcare Hosp and saw Dr Ashfaq, and we were also recommended Dr Chris Whately - both excellent for knees. We were referred to see a Sports Physio - Chris Page on Beach Rd and I have to say that he has far more knowledge than the Drs, and is full of advice. I wouldn't do any exercise until you have seen both the Dr and the physio as you could do more harm than good - the physio will advise you on the correct movements. My DD must wear good footwear all the time at the moment (no heels or real flatties) and is doing specific exercises 3 times per day. Good luck Thumbs up from me for Dr Ashfaq Konchwalla at Medcare, he did surgery on my shoulder last year, then after the recommended physio I am 100%. He is very well qualified and sports specialist. Double thumbs up from me as well; Dr Ashfaq repaired my badly broken/dislocated ankle with ORIF surgery and the subsequent physio program from Chris Page was absolutely excellent. Really concur that what Chris doesn't know about leg-and-knee stuff isn't worth knowing. I have a 'brand-new' leg as a result of his brilliant care. :)

I would advise you to first go to the doctor, since I don't know what is wrong with your knee. After they fixed everything inside my knee, I went for physiotherapy. When I was there, the physiotherapist told me, while I was on the bed, contract your upper leg muscle. I did.... she couldn't even see it... So that is where most of the problem came from and led to surgery. In the gym you actually should do all things that strengthen your leg muscles. Cross trainer, cycling, that machine where you push yourself back with your legs, the one where you sit down, put that weight bar under your feet and lift your legs up. You should start with light weights, that do strengthen your muscles but don't put too much stress. And in case of too much pain, take is easy... I have never been advised any kind of diet or supplements.

I have had knee pain for a long time (in my twenties) and went to American Hospital. I needed surgery and I feel they did a great job. I believe all people who I dealt with were Western, since you are looking for it. Check if your insurance covers American Hospital, because most don't and it is rather expensive. But... main thing for a healthy knee is sports. After I recovered from the surgery I still needed a lot of sports to totally get rid of the pain. Cycling and swimming or walking in the water in case of too much pain is the best. Don't go running, that will do more damage. Thanks so much Eva B - if i go to the gym...can i still use the gym if i have knee pain and just avoid any machines that put stress on the knees i.e. treadmill, step machine, squats etc...I gather I can go on the cross trainer, and do all the upper body things as well as sit ups and inner/outer thigh but avoid any stress on the knees? were you advised on any vitamins/ diet that would also help like oily fish, milk, and vit tablets?

Hi! every one gave u gud advise. You can follow these.but extra thing if u want to do with no side effects is Honey Bee Propolis.this is available @ all groccery stores .I find that in carefour and LuLu,inhoney section. just take a tsp of honey with propolis. it has anti viral and anti bacterial properties too.propolis has great anti inflimatery effects. . It worked for my knee.I have knee problem since 9 and a half year.when i was in my mid 20s. i went to see the dr in Canda and got every kind of test done.including blood test and Exrays from every angle . Then I saw a dr,and like other told you .that he diognosed the problem .in a single visit without touching my knee.only looking at the way i walk . he also suggested for aquatics and yoga.i went for yoga.(but for muslims sum yoga excersises are brohibited as they pray to Hindu gods in those exersises. sorry for the bad spelling but feeling not very good today.s cantt think much about spellings. hope it will be helpful for You. Get well soon.

Dairy in take is important. Understand you drink milk, but you need to take the fortified milk (we all should) as we hit 30s. I had similar joint /osteo pains and started drinking Anlene milk powder. It is fortified and has higher Ca, vitamin D and K. It's available in every super market and is worth the money. Hope that helps

As others have suggested, check your Vit D levels. Suffered from hip, knee, ankle, wrist (you name a joint: it hurt!) pain for months last year. Thought it was due to pregnancies (!) or onset of arthritis. Turns out my VitD levels were at rock bottom.

Try Dr Bassel Darwish, he is at Welcare until 25 April and then at Health Call at Heathcare City from 7 May. The number there is 04-363-5343. I struggled for 5 years before I saw him and he took one look at the way I walked and diagnosed me correctly. Go and see someone sooner rather than later. He will also check for Vit D levels. He is Syrian and trained in America. I think he is fantastic.
