Mold in the closet-need advice

I discovered mold all along the back wall of one of our closets; after removing all clothes and cleaning the closet the wood does not seem affected (i.e. no apparent water damage or otherwise). The closet only had heavy coats and jackets in it, nothing that could have genereted humidity itself, so I'm really confused as to how this happened. Any similar experiences? Is there any way to prevent it from happening again?
