More Maid Troubles .........

Hi All,

I started a thread possibly a month ago about my maid who was constantly asking for more .... more breaks, more salary, visitors, more benefits .... MORE MORE MORE! The thread disappeared .....

Anyway I went away for 5 weeks and just came back yesterday to come back to MORE sob stories and she actually had the cheek to TELL me that while I was away she was working part-time for someone else and wants to know if she can continue it even whilst I am here so she can earn more money because she isnt happy with the 1500 AED I am paying her.

I am ABSOLUTELY IRRATE ..... She knew the salary, hours, conditions, and situation she was entering into when she told me she was happy in November after her 1 month trial period so I forked out 9000 AED on her VISA and went away for 5 weeks and now she is telling me she isnt happy, she is bored, she needs more breaks and she wants to work outside for a few hours every week to make more money and she doesnt like living in an apartment etc etc etc. I explained it is ILLEGAL for her to work for anyone else as I am her sponsor and she didnt apologise or care .... she said everyone does it and she wants to!

Does anyone know about cancelling her VISA proceedure? Is it easy? Do I get my 2000 AED deposit back? Can I transfer the VISA to someone else if she finds another job? Or should I just cancel it? Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I wont have someone with such a bad, ungrateful attiture living in my house any longer.

PLEASE PLEASE help ..... I am so annoyed that I invested 2 months into this relationship only to be back at square one.

Thanks,
Natasha

If she does have trouble with her maid, I'm fairly sure she won't post it on here now.

They don't need their passport to abscond. Ask the few women on here who have recently had to deal with it. I hope it works out for you.

I guess if someone apologises then they deserve a second chance .... right?? This is the first time I have clearly said the rules and what I expect and that if she is not happy with it then I will happily get rid off her ... I am hoping she tried to push me, realised she couldnt and now she will settle. My instinct is telling me she is a good person and she has come recommended by someone else who is very surprised by her behaviour. Regarding the absconding, where can she go without her passport? And just say she did run away, do the police catch them often or rarely? She definitely will not be working outside as I have tightened up on her free time and it is literally just Friday. Anyway I hope you are all wrong and I have put my faith in one of the good ones but if not then I will have to deal with that myself. All my valuables are usually always locked away anyway as I am careful about that type of thing by nature. Anyway thanks for all the posts and it was your stern words that made me stand my ground and threaten to call the police so hopefully it has done the trick!

I think this maid deserves a pay raise for such a performance. And Natasha, again you sound like a nice kind hearted person, but you are very very silly. You will receive zero sympathy when you come back in a few weeks complaining that she absconded, stole, threw a tantrum, etc. You should cut her loose before you find yourself in a very sticky situation with this one.

She is just biding time. I am sure she is planning her strategy. The main thing is that you know that she is not satisfied deep down (or perhaps not so deep), she wants more. She is quiet for now, but not for long.

I really wonder sometimes what they are thinking. THis salary you're paying her is quite good compare to salaries back in her country. It's a job and she needs to follow your rules or else she looses it? Will she be better off unemployed? You should make her realise that...

NatashaK, there are always subtle signs with those maids who will disappoint. More often than not we choose to ignore those signs and then exclaim surprise and disbelief when it goes wrong! Your maid has made it very clear where this is heading. My maid of 2 years also apologised and said 'your house, your rules' when I reprimanded her for unacceptable behaviour. Once I started enforcing those houserules....she wanted to leave because she didn't like the rules (which forbade her engaging in illegal activity). They say what they think you want to hear and then start scheming to secure their position and leave you in the c$@p! If you are going to keep her I suggest you get the Nannycam supplier details from 7 Days yesterday and install a few in your house!!

Just updating ......... she apologised and said she wants to stay with us so I have agreed! Let's see if I come home one day to find she has gone with all my shoes and bags !!! Fingers crossed she turns out to be one of the good maids and it was just an early hiccup xx So she's the one in charge in your house then!!! I would take Wikkid up on her maid - interview her at least - there are plenty of very good housekeepers here who are truthful and honest - this one is no good and she's the one in charge as you've backed down. I would lock everything up and would feel very uncomfortable in my own home if I were you.......

If I were on the outside I would totally tell me to get rid off her but my instinct tells me she is trustworthy and she is such an amazing cleaner and v efficient. I have absolutely laid down the rules and explained I am boss and what I say goes which she has accepted so I am going to give her another chance and hope for the best! I feel the difference with my maid vs others is that she is actually a good housemaid and does everything to a good standard which is invaluable. Anyway I!ll update should it all go horribly wrong :/ edited by Natashak on 17/01/2011

As soon as a maid starts to make demands then her card is marked. I would trust your initial gut feeling. I know it is hard after paying out so much money. I am now on my 3rd live in maid and thankfully found the right person after wasting money on 2 useless liars before her.

Get rid of her. Marching orders. You will only get your deposit back if either she gets another sponsor or she leaves the country. Cancel her visa and do not give her the opportunity to do this to anyone else. My first nanny who we spent an awful lot of money on due to the complication of her visa ended up pregnant by a man who wasn't her husband and we had to pay to send her back home and she had only been with us 6 months.

NatashaK - can you drop me an email? Im on wikkid at mail dot com. We are leaving shortly and I want to find another job for my maid, who is lovely. She doesnt have much experience with babies etc so Id rather try find her somewhere that that is not part of her responsibilities. She is a hard worker and I pay 1500dhs/month, which she is happy with (I provide some other stuff but would rather go into it off the forum if you are interested). I can transfer her visa across to you as well. If you look on my previous posts, you'll see I had posted about this before, but the one job has fallen through and Im still waiting to hear from the other lady. Our clock is ticking, and I'd really like to find somewhere for her sooner rather than later.

It is such a nightmare finding a maid who is actually humble and respectful ..... biatch and mare are exactly the words that come to my mind also!! Breteuil .... I am sorry you had this situation. It is just awful to invest time into getting them settled and used to your way of life and then they change and we are left with no choice. Sorry to be stupid but what is a PRO? And also, do you get the 9000 DHS back for all the monies spent on VISA, medical check etc? I havent heard that before. I thought you only get back the deposit of 2000 DHS when they leave the country? We have lost the money for the medical check, the plane ticket to make her come and a lot of time. I was going to pay for her plane ticket to send her back but the lady at the immigration told us that she had to pay for it. She made up her mind so quickly that we had not been through the last step for the visa but we had already made the deposit and almost all the process was done. We got our money back easely. The difference is that it was less than a month for us to make the cancellation and that she did not have her visa yet. Maybe that's why we got our deposit back. The PRO is someone who works for many companies and he will help you with the administration (ID, Visa etc). He helps you a lot and makes you gain time. Good luck

Natasha, no long and nice chats with the maid. Give her a list of instructions to follow, the first one telling her that she will work for you until she has paid you back your expenses and she will no longer leave the premises without permission from you. She is to longer request anything and work in silence. Other option is jail until her family cough up your expenses.

The best thing is to go to DNRD and speak to a supervisor, it will be someone senior who will fully understand (maids are a hot topic at DNRD)! You will get the 2k deposit back but not sure about the other expenses, which i would tell your maid she has to pay you back, that will make her think. At this point i would hold her passport and lock everything of value up and tell her straight to her face if she runs or steals you will have her thrown in jail and the key thrown away, you know the right people to make this happen. Get rid and ask yourself do you really need a maid, they are more trouble than they are worth.

Hi, Sorry to read this, the same story happened to us recently. Our maid came from India(very long and expensive process to make her come) and once she was is Dubai in our house, she said that she wanted to work in a school and do part time for us...We had to go back to the immigration and do all the process backward. The lady at the immigration was really nice and told the maid that she had a really good salary and could not understand our behaviour. Her reply was that she did not want to be a maid.. You will get your 2000 DHRS deposit back quickly and have to wait a little bit more for the 9700. She stole a lot of things from our house too, so be careful before she leaves. Now we have hire someone else and everything is fine. She was already in Dubai and we only had to go once to the immigration, the PRO could handle the rest. Good luck.

Natashata A number of years ago this was the procedure but don't know if it still holds true. The only way around to avoid loosing your money is if she found a job with another employer and the visa was transferred, then your money would then be refunded. Sounds like she needed to have a higher salary but started with you to get her going.I am sure your may be aware sometimes maids try things on if they are getting either direct or indirect pressure from home or other maids.Hope you get it resolved and remain as calm as you can. We all get caught out in one way or another dealing with such different cultures and companies here and it is very irritating and puts a big hole in our pockets . Good luck

natasha, thanks to 'kind' employers out there we have a gazillion biatch-maids wondering Dubai in search of greener pastures. Just hand her in to immigration and tell them she worked part time without permission and then have her put in a holding cell until you arrange her cancellation and BAN. I would go the whole way with this one. Imagine, you want to let her go and find another 'natasha'.....not kind. Well said SQ, I totally agree i wouldn't give her the time of day, the greedy mare!
