Hi

Me and my Hubby will be relocating to Dubai by end of August. I will be around 25-26 weeks pregnant by then. has anyone got similar situation? can anyone please help me find out if baby essentials (baby cot, car seat, push chair, bottle sterilizer etc..) are reasonably cheap in Dubai or it's better to buy them from here before we go.

Sorry it's our first baby hence why I am a bit anxious.. ta v much in advance :)

Hi there aimsoni016, With regards to the VAT I believe you have to show the goods or have them on your person at the airport. I would ask the retailer in the UK whilst doing the purchase. But overall from my UK friends that have had babies here, everything is cheaper back home. A baby gro from mamas and papas is £40 here, back home it's £15 or less due to the summer sales. If you can buy furniture; crib, changing table, rocking chair etc try to do it. I know if I could I would. Mamas and papas-cheaper back home Mother care-cheaper John Lewis- we don't have here, But you can buy a pack of 5 newborn vests for £11 I know someone suggested IKEA but they were in the papers again, as their chest of drawers 'Malmö' fell and killed a toddler. I am quite fussy with my own furniture and for my baby I'm going to pottery barn as its all certified under American safety laws. Hope this advice helps

hubby's employer has confirmed that maternity will be covered by the health provider.. they haven't mentioned anything about the waiting time!!! They are well aware that I am already pregnant and will be around 25 weeks when we get there. I have looked into Al Zahra hospital and couple of other gov hospitals as they're reasonably cheap compare to others in case we have to pay from our own pockets.. Does anyone know about health card provided by gov and what does it consist? how long does it takes to get one?

Usually there are waiting periods for maternity on company provided health insurance. For our first baby my preg started after a few months of my hubby joining his new job and we completed the waiting period just by few days and got covered. Important to find out if your current pregnancy would be covered. If not, you need to start looking for reasonable out-of-pocket options for delivery and rest of pregnancy management.

Just a word of warning re health insurance. I am not sure whether your husbands company will be able to take out insurance which will cover you when already pregnant. It may be that his company will require to foot the entire bill for the delivery etc. I was in this position over a decade ago and my husbands company paid the entire bill but both myself and my daughter needed ongoing treatment after the delivery which insurance didn't cover and his company were reluctant to pay. Probably worth getting in writing from them what they are prepared to cover.

On a serious note... The is almost nothing you can't find in Dubai. You can shop from IKEA to the high-end. I wouldn't worry too much about bringing things from your home country unless there are certain specific requirements. Best wishes!

My advice is to not buy a bugaboo. ;) (kidding) I just think back to my first child. How much money I spent buying the "fanciest stroller" when she ended up in a $20 umbrella stroller a few months later. Of course..."Live and let live!"

Thank you Botero17 for your advise I will definitely look in to it..Also, if I am shipping all baby related stuff with all my furniture can I still claim VAT back? Comp99 - hubby's employer is going to contribute towards health insurance so we will need to do that once we're there I guess!

Hi there, I've lived in Dubai for the past 3 1/2 years. I too am pregnant and will be buying my pram in the uk, due to the falling £ against the Dirham. For example a bugaboo pram Here is almost £1000!!! In uk John Lewis it's £800 and you get the tax back. My advice buy as much as you can in uk depending on your luggage allowance, or if you have shipped over along with your own furniture even better. Clothes are really expensive-buy in UK Laniosh nipple cream and baby wash is £20 here it's much cheaper back home. Hope this helps
