Yes, you should give the lawyer a call right away.. I think Sandy mentioned that she has free consultation?

Hi, I just wanted to revive this thread to see how the previous posters got on with bringing the nanny back to the UK? We are moving to the UK in August, and want to bring my Filipina nanny. She has been working with us for 6 years, and has visited the UK four times on vacation with us. If anyone was able to do it for longer than 6 months, I would love to know how, or which immigration lawyer you used. thanks

Hi again Dinks - Just a question - did you (or your friends) apply to take your maid before April 2012, as that's when the rules changed. I know it may not be worth it but still would like to understand the options we do/ do not have. Hi, Yes we brought her over pre the rule change. I have a friend who works in immigration in the UK (she only deals with visas for Filipinos) she said that theyre clamping down massively as almost all visit visas issues result in Filipinos running away. There are thousands of illegal girls here looking for work. The girl I found here is a billion times better than the girl I brought over from Dubai. Honestly they really change once they are here. You have to pay them upwards of £300 pw, hours are 7-7 with 2 hours off for breaks, one and a half days off a week, plus all public holidays. I really think its not worth the hassle of bringing her over plus the visa renewal each year which takes 7 months and extra expense, plus TAX and NI. I would find someone here its so much easier. Where are you moving to? I could help you find someone if thats what you decide.

Thanks Dinks for the advice. We'd just be so sad to leave our maid here as she's been with us almost 3 years and helped care for my youngest since she was born - all the kids love her and she really is part of the family! Even to take her for just 6 months to help us settle in, and make the transition easier would be great (one less goodbye for now!). The visa issue is that it now states we have to be visiting the UK, not going permanently. I hear (eg lower on this thread) that there are ways around that. The rules now state they cannot change employers. Anyway, if the process takes forever it may just not work out :(

Personally I think its better to hire a maid once you are in the UK. There are millions of Filipinos in the UK. Every single person I know, including me, have had issues with their maids that they brought over from Dubai. You will have to pay them upwards of £300 per week if you dont want her to run away as once they have their visa they can work for whoever they want. The immigration process takes forever if you are lucky enough to get her a visa (many girls are declined)

Hi Fefi75 - We are in the same situation as you, very keen to take our maid with us to the UK if possible. We also realised an immigration lawyer may be the best way to go but are afraid it will be expensive. Then yesterday I found this link on UKBA website, http://oisc.homeoffice.gov.uk/ They have lists of regulated Immigration advisors - both free ones (not for profit) and for-profit companies. We are going to try call one of these and see what advice we can get. If you like, perhaps we can email each other and share ideas/info? Hope your plans are working out.

Once she steps into the UK you may find her family status is not quite what you thought it was, which is why immigration make the procedure complex. I know it's not quite the same thing, but our neighbours made a mistake of taking their Filipino maid with them on holiday to Italy where their family lives. Imagine how shocked they were when she ran off, leaving all her possessions behind, after being with them for years, caring for newborns etc. I hope it doesn't happen to Fefi but I, too, can see why Lolacat is skeptical.

Thanks Ladies. I will get in touch with a lawyer, seems the best option of all. Mum2girls, thanks for understanding that our nanny is part of my family after such a long time together, and this is the main drive to explore all options. Off me go to look for a lawyer. S

My friend works in immigration. you will not be allowed to take your maid to the UK as you are not a UK national plus they have changed the laws and only holiday visas are issued not domestic worker visas, which is what she would need to work in the UK. This is a factually inaccurate statement on many levels Domestic worker visas are still issued and nationality of OP has nothing to do with it

You do understand that you will have to pay your "nanny" minimum wage, tax and national insurance, as well as tax on her living in the house. You may also have to register and put her on a course as she will be deemed an unqualified child minder. She will also need a criminal records check. There are hundreds of qualified nannies in the UK, the UK needs unskilled unqualified immigrants like a whole in the head.

Thanks so much. She has been with us for 5.5 years, so we shall be ok in terms of Years with us. Might look at a lawyer to support, as would be really hard to go, and after 6 months she has to leave. It is tru that the legislation changed in 2012 as mum2 says. Just so difficult to find answers online and to get through someone to help. So a lawyer might be a good recommendation! THanks
