Night coughing can be a symptom of asthma. Has the doctor done a peak flow test?
He hasn't yet as we originally saw him for the constantly running nose. Nasonex which he prescribed relieved the nasal congestion completely but the cough hasn't gone.
Thank you for all your replies. I'll definitely insist that our doc makes tests to really find out what it might be.
A pharmasist advised me Zyrtec yesterday, but I refused as we already take Aerius. Maybe should try this one instead.
Just a suggestion as it could be a number of things, but if it doesn't clear up have her tested as this happened to a friend of mine and it turned out that her daughter had a fungal infection in her lungs and she needed very specific medication to treat it. I hope tou get bto the bottom of this and it clears up soon.
Hi, it sounds like a croup type of cough, which is a spasm in the larynx and isn't allergy-related. It would be worse at night due to lying down. It would be hard to diagnose and is often diagnosed after ruling everything else out, and there isn't much that can really be done, and it will go eventually. That's if it is croup, it may not be - but it sounds like there hasn't been much success so far. I really feel for you - lack of sleep is very draining and of course you want your LO to be better. Maybe a repeat visit to your GP could be in order if you're not seeing much improvement.
If it's not an allergy, it may just be that when she's lying down it is worse - you've tried making the pillow higher but something that used to work a treat when our LO was little and suffered terribly with chesty ailments was: you sitting up and sleeping upright in the bed (sorry but you'll just have to!) and lying LO face down on you - so she is at quite a steep angle up and also getting the warmth from you on her chest
used to stop ours coughing instantly when nothing else worked. good luck x
Sometimes just changing the antihistamine can work. Change to Zyrtec, it works wonders for my children's night cough. Also get on the wait list to see Dr. Loubser, he is a fantastic allergist.
