Hi ladies.

I am wondering what the steps are to apply for NZ citizenship by descent and getting a passport? My husband is a Kiwi, but I believe we still need to apply for the citizenship by descent because we live overseas?

TIA

Thank you to everyone for all the information. I think it's starting to make more sense now :) Did you send the documents off yourself to the offices or drop it with the NZ consulate in Dubai? Perkynana, how long did it take for the passport to be returned to you? Due in November and i'm hoping to go home for Christmas :( it's going to be a tight squeeze ! Thank you again for the info. I did call the consulate today and they were hopeless. They didn't even know what the citizenship by descent form was! Thank goodness for you ladies. Didn't use the consulate at all - just couriered off to London. Processing for both steps took about 5 weeks and we only managed to get photos of her with both eyes open at the same time about a week after her birth. Also, remember that you need to do bubs residency visa - you should check if you can bring bubs back in on a visit visa. From memory we had three months from birth to get DD her visa so you need to keep an eye on how that works for your timing as well.

You have to apply for NZ citizenship before you can apply for passport. You can do the whole process at the same time but the citizenship takes 28 days regardless. Then the passport process to take place straight after. You need to get citizenship by descent form and your husbands passport. And also the passport application. I did this for my children who were born in Australia and this was the process. I don't know what the process is here with getting passports. You might have to send it back to NZ or Australia. There is a NZ passport office in sydney Yep sounds like the same process. We did this for DD last year and will do it for DD2 in September when she arrives. You fill out the Citizenship by Decent forms and the Passport application forms at the same time - do everything by the letter for each form as if they are being submitted separately (ie where copies are required attach them to both forms etc). Send them both off at the same time (in the same courier) and they process them together and you will receive everything back together. The office we send things off to from UAE is London. Very easy and was no hassle. Trick is getting the photo as apparently they are picky about this. We took it at home with DD on the floor and us standing above her - easier than in the photo shop. edited by perkynana on 24/06/2013

Citizenship By Decent is given to a child who is born outside of New Zealand to a New Zealand Citizen. For a NZ Citizen to pass on their citizenship to their child who is born outside of Ne Zealand they must either have been born in New Zealand themselves or completed the full Citizenship process. The process is quite simple: You need to fill out the application form it takes 20 working days, and passport 10 working days but for all 3 of my kids I got the passport within the month. [url=http://www.dia.govt.nz/diawebsite.nsf/wpg_URL/Services-Citizenship-Citizenship-Application-Fees-and-Forms?OpenDocument#one'>link[/url'> You then need to send the child's Original attested English Birth Cert (Baby Steps will do the whole process for you) The claim parent (your husband in this case) needs to send proof of citizenship and 2 forms of ID proving that he uses his name in the community any of these two will do: Current utility account (e.g. telephone, electricity) issued within the last 12 months. Current drivers licence. Proof of their name on an electoral roll. Current photo identification cards. Bank or tax statements issued within the last 12 months. Current cards issued for Government services. I sent in a DEWA bill and a copy of my drivers license (which was notorised by the NZ Consulate) but you can send in an original bank statement and DEWA Bill without going to the consulate. You then fill out the passport application put it all in the same envelope send it off and wait.

You didn't say it was for your bub-to-be, sorry, I thought you meant for yourself. You'll need to see the consulate once the baby arrives and take the birth certificate and the English translation, I can't remember whether the translation has to be attested or not, its been a while LOL.

Just reading all this, and my interpretation is yes you have to complete the by descent form and the passport form separately but you will have to contact the NZ consulate in any event. Might be easier to speak with them and get everything sorted.

Thank you for all the info. I'm confused what this 'citizenship by descent form' is and when it is needed. If my husband is kiwi, I am not and I will be giving birth here in the UAE. Do I need to fill this form in? Or can I go straight into the passport application.

Citizenship by descent only applies if one/both of your parents were Kiwis. If you aren't a NZ citizen yourself then this might be helpful http://www.dia.govt.nz/Services-Citizenship-New-Zealand-Citizenship-by-Descent Give the people at the NZ consulate in Dubai a call. The consulate number is +971 4 331 7500. They'll probably refer you to the Immigration Dept whose office is open 8:30 am to 12 noon Sunday to Thursday and their email is [email protected] which they seem to prefer over phone calls. They'll have the answers. edited by Hamra on 24/06/2013

Cant help with citizenship by descent but the passport application is really easy and quick turn around. Just download the form online, complete it and send off. The only thing is that you need to have another NZ citizen sign to knowing the kiwi!!!
