We also did our pet relocation ourselves (2 cats back to the UK) and I would highly recommend it. It seemed daunting at first, but it was actually nice being in control of the whole process ourselves. When we dropped them off at Sky Cargo we were even allowed to wait with them before they were loaded onto the plane which I thought was a really nice touch (not that the cats appreciated it of course, they were too busy sulking!)
Something I learned today, dogs entering the UK must have paperwork showing they have has Tapeworm treatment 1-5 days before they travel.
Also, they ca't fly until vaccines are 21 days old, even if they're only annual boosters.
Hi ChilliChai.
Thanks for all that information.
Microchip & vaccs are all up to luckily.
I have already contacted Sky Cargo & the lady has sent me all the forms to fill in.
Looks a bit daunting but will get them done & see what the costs come down to.
Think the cat will be fine but worried about the dog as he is 13 years old!
Hi,
Yes, it was Dubai to Heathrow. This cost included the flight, vaccinations, ministry and vet checks etc. As you would have to pay for a ticket for each animal in separate crates I imagine the cost would be approx Dhs8k for both...but that's just a guess.
I'm afraid it was quite some time ago now and I can't remember the process at all, aside from the following small pointers that may be useful:
- you must have evidence the pet was microchipped and identified at the time of the rabies jab.
- At the time, Emirates Sky Cargo was the cheapest. You drop the animals at the Sky Cargo terminal up to 4 hours before you fly (the reality for us was that we were so late it was less than an hour and a lot of begging!)
- we visited DKC to ask their advice re process and to check our documents were in place before we made a decision whether to use them or do it ourselves. Piecing this and the info from DEFRA and various other websites we got there in the end.
- when getting ministry veterinary sign-off at cargo village 24hrs before the flight he didn't want to see the dog - it was just filling in a form and paying a fee in his office...I had taken the dog with me - he looked at it like he'd never seen one before and asked me what type it was (spaniel)...he was probably being polite as I had a dog in his office!
- don't worry about how the animals will handle the flight...I thought my dogs would be shaking wrecks as they are both fairly needy - scared of tin foil, boxes, balloons, not so loud noises, goign in the car etc, one is blind, and when you return to the house from the garden it's like you've been away 2 weeks...but greeting them at Heathrow after they'd had their walk it's like they'd moved on with their lives and I was the needy one! There was no mess in their crates, they weren't thirsty etc.
Morning. Thanks for all the replies.
Tallybalt- my quote from Doghouse was the one at 11,000dhs!! This is for them to go as 'manifest cargo' to Manchester on the same flight as us (apparently this is the only way you can do it if you are flying into Manchester)?
Sanddy_Dogg: Thanks for the info.
salsaB: Will contact 'pets on jets'. Do you know if your daughter just used them or did she have to use a company here also?
ChilliChai- sounds good. So for a small terrier dog & cat it probably should be not much more? Was this DXB- UK? Any chance you can let me know how you did it? If so will send you my email. Thanks.
I did the whole process myself and it cost just under dhs4k for a medium sized dog. You can get crates made by Dubai Kennels and Cattery for about 700dhs if you can't find one the correct size.
Firstly - sorry Tallybalt - all pets entering the UK must enter ss manifested cargo, not excess baggage.
You can fly to AMS on KLM as excess baggage for USD 200 but you then have to get from the Netherlands to the UK and you can only do this via selected ports.
Heathrow is the most expensive airport to come into and if you have to enter via Heathrow make sure the animal is received during office hours Monday to Friday. The price jumos up for out of hours, weekends and public holidays. LGW is cheaper and Manchester is even cheaper still, This can account fo about 30-40% of the cost.
Supply your own crate, you can find what size you need following this guide http://www.iata.org/whatwedo/cargo/live-animals/pets/Pages/index.aspx
Petexpress can be difficult to get hold of but will only charge a fraction of the cost of other companies to do the paperwork. Keep trying.
My friend got quoted a similar price for a very small dog a few days ago by a relocation company who added 50% on to the retail cost of a crate and wanted to charge nearly 4k for paperwork
Hope you have better luck if you try Petexpress.
Still waiting for a response to my 3 emails over the past few weeks!
We used Alison at Doghouse when we cameto Dubai and she was very good.
Will be using her again soon.
You have two options to ship pets. Option one is for the pet to fly with you as accompanied baggage. Option two is for the pet to be shipped separately, with a professional shipper covering everything from pick up at your end to delivery to the new country.
As you can imagine, Option two is by far the most expensive, and the quote you received is probably for this type of shipping. Option one is much cheaper but requires special permission from the airlines before you make your flight booking, and only some airlines accept pets as accompanied baggage. Of those who do, KLM has the best reputation.
A very good and licensed pet shipper based here in Dubai is a lovely woman named Alison and her company is called Dubai Doghouse FZE. You can find her website by googling it. We know people who have used her to fly their pets to the UK/USA at a fraction of the cost charged by other agencies for shipping pets separately. I do recommend you contact Alison via her website and she'll give you all the options for shipping pets, the individual requirements and the prices for each option.
Shipping pets really does not have to be that expensive if you're willing to do some leg work and are flexible.

When we came over we used DKC, Dubai Kennels and Cattery, they were absolutely brilliant, and can not fault there service, we brought over a Border Collie and a Birman cat, in total it cost me £1800 on the UK side and 5000 AED this side, and that was door to door service, fully registered etc, I know when we return back to the UK I will be using them, good luck and happy travels
Hi all,
I am putting this question onto the main forum as unfortunately I haven't had a response on the pets one.
We are relocating back to the UK this summer and have a small Terrier/cross dog & short haired domestic cat that we will be taking with us.
So far I have had two quotes- both between 10-11,000dhs!!
I'm gob-smacked & can't believe it costs this much.
Has anyone done this recently & it has cost less?
Easy to do everything yourself?
If anyone has done it, I would love for you to contact me back.
Please let me know.
Thanks.
