I need to appeal for more help...

DH and I are in the process of buying a house in the UK, for which we need to provide an attested copy of DHs Passport along with an attested copy of 'proof of current address'

We have the Du Telephone bill for proof of address but they need a notarised copy - the notary public says that they do not provide this service... they suggested to go to Du and get them to stamp the copy - I'm not convinced.

Has anyone done this via a notary/lawyer/bank official and can you advise who to use and how much it costs.

Many many thanks in advance.

pinotG - most organisations (banks, solicitors etc) in the UK ask for a certified / notarised copy of a utility bill to use as proof of address. The certified copy is just a photocopy of the utility bill and a qualified UK solicitor writes something like "I [name of UK solicitor'> certify that this is a true copy of the original document" with the date and the solicitor's signature. So all you need to do is find a UK qualified solicitor in Dubai. The British embassy has a list: [url=http://ukinuae.fco.gov.uk/en/help-for-british-nationals/when-things-go-wrong/if-you-need-lawyer/lawyers-in-dubai'>link[/url'> If you are happy to send off the original of your utility bill showing your address there should be no need to get a copy certified e.g. to open a UK bank account last year I sent the UK bank an original of my DEWA bill as my proof of address. It wasn't certified by anyone as it was an original and not a copy. Hope that helps! edited by Hannah33 on 11/10/2011

no, I can do it for you but it isn't part of my job so there is no rate, and I would not want to charge you for something which takes 2 minutes! If you are in Mirdif you are welcome to call on me when you are back. if you post your email (sorry don't have one I'm happy to put on here; one of these days I will actually acquire an anonymous email address for this purpose!) I will send you my contact details and you can get in touch when you are ready

hey sandfly, thank you so much for your reply, yes you're right, she requires a certified copy of our utility bill... thank you for clarifying. We live in Mirdif :) but I wouldn't want to put you out at all. We're also travelling from tomorrow morning until the end of the month... if you are able to help, would we be able to call on you upon our return? We are willing to pay the going rate for the service too (along with a box of choccies I might add!!) If not you, I would much appreciate if you could jot down the name of any lawyer this side of town who could help - as you can tell, this is completely new terriroty for both my DH and I. Thank you again.

what does your UK (English?) solicitor say you actually need in terms of proof of address? if it is, for example, a certified copy of a phone bill, there are other people than notaries who can do that certifying. I also have the feeling that I remember someone having to get a bill (I think it was a DEWA one) attested for use abroad, and rather than having it notarised, they had to get it authenticated by DEWA themselves, then straight to the Ministry of Justice for the after-notarisation steps - but as I have never actually heard of an English solicitor needing a notarised anything, I suspect you may be ok with a certified copy. If you are, any lawyer could do it. And if you are able to wander over to the Garhoud/Mirdiff side of town, I could do it for you, but have no time to go anywhere else at the moment
