Gummy, yes, your birth certificate stays the same, to show what name you were born as, and in Canada you 'assume' your new name. This is because you both sign the marriage certificate durring the wedding ceremony. So this way you have documentation.
Okay, not to go off topic- but trying to help out:
are you here on your own work visa? If not- you would be here on DH visa, correct? Do you/ did you not have to get a marriage license stamped by Canadian government to show you are legally married before entering the UAE? I only ask, because that is what i had to do, to legally be allowed to live here with DH.
When I first moved to Dubai in Feb of '08 I was on hubby's visa. We had to get our marriage certiface attested at immigration after getting it stamped by both the Canadian and Thai consulates. He's Thai and so is the marriage certificate.
Unlike in the west, or most places (I thought), you do not sign your marriage certificate in Thailand. Very strange. Also here, you don't sign your driver's license, which I also find strange. With all the paperwork that foreigners go through in both regions, thhey don't ask for signatures on these.
When did they alter the law on changing name on passport? I only had mine done in 2009, which is why i ask :)
On June 1st, 2006, the day that I went to the embassy in Bangkok. Arrrgggghhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!
As for the driver's license or health card from Canada, by the time I had moved to Dubai, I had been out of Canada for 4 years and I didn't have either at that point.
Gummy- yes you can just "assume" a name, but it is not the same as "legally" changing a name. I legally changed mine back in Canada, so that my passport would officially say my new name (Dh last name) and not my old birth name.
so complicated....
I'm not in DUbai yet so I can't comment on that.
But most of my friends that change their name to their husband's names don't change the names on their birth certificates or their SIN cards. They just "assume" the name on health cards, driver's licenses, etc.
I kept my name so I am not of too much help!
also.. according to the website, you only need 1) birth certificate from Canada (if you were born there)
and 2) something like driving license/ health card etc.. (if you still have one?)
It says nothing about needing a sin card (and those are the only 2 documents i needed when i applied)

gosh the Canadian government is so confusing.....

i would NOT have it mailed here!!! I dont trust the post here at ALL, most of all with an important document like that!!
When i changed my passport to married name, i never changed my sin card
My issue is the opposite. I wasn't able to change my name on my passport because the ruling was changed on the day that I went to the Canadian embassy in BKK. I went to the counter with all of my papers, the girsl said 'we don't do that anymore'. I said that there was nothing on their website and asked her when it changed. She said 'todaaaaaayyyyyy'. Urrrggggggghhhhh!!!!!!!!
So now I'm on a new passport as of Nov 2010 but I'm still not able to change my name. I was married in thailand but the marriage certificates there don't have signatures on them :\: I don't have intentions of going back to Canada, I just want to be able to change my name on my passport.
So, because I don't have bank accounts or property in Canada, the only way that I can change my name is with a new SIN card with my married name on it. This part is pretty painless.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't trust the postal system here. :-D Thanks for your advice.

When i changed my passport to married name, i never changed my sin card (but i never plan on using my sin card again). Do you plan on going back to Canada to work? As far as i "know" you dont need a new sin card as your old one is still valid under your birth name (but could be wrong?)
Either way- i would send it to my parents and have them keep it safe until i could have it handed over in person, rather then mail system!
Hope that helps!
This thread shows how much of a procrastinator I am. I want to change my nmae on my passport to my married name. It used to be so that you could just have an ammendmend added, but this stopped on the day that I went into the Canadian Embassy in Bangkok after I got married. Grrrrrrrrrrrr......
So this is 5 years ago. When I moved here I asked at the Canadian Consulate and I was told that to change my name, I can apply for a new SIN card with all the papers to show that I'm married etc. etc. OK, this is good news. You can apply via mail or in person.
Here's my question. ;-) Would it be 'safe' to have it mailed to me here or would I be better having it mailed to my parents' address in Canada then we figure out a way to get it here to me? Can I trust the postal system here for something like this? I know I might sound paranoid, but after being here three years, I'm really weary about who to trust with anything legal.
