I have my parents visiting at the moment and they are very keen to learn more about the birds we see in the garden and out walking. Does anyone know if there is a book on Birds in the UAE or something similar? We've asked in a couple of places and got the inevitanle "No maaaaaaam". Thanks.

Just a thought but why not take them out to the Birds of Prey Show? We went back in March and it was fantastic, you get up close and personal with falcons, snow owls, etc. and the presenters are fantastic - it is a breeding facility too for the birds. There are vouchers in the family Entertainment Book - from memory I think the show starts at 4pm. Here's the link http://birdsofprey-show-dubai.jimdo.com/

We have a book called "The Birds of the United Arab Emirates" by Colin Richardson. (ISBN1872839002) We bought it at Magrudy's about 6 years ago. I guess it is probably out of print now? It has photos of most birds to be found here - even those who only pass through on their migration. The maps are a bit outdated though. There is a man who writes a bird-watching column for one of the news papers - I can't remember if it is the 7days or the other one which only appears on Thu's (Express?). It might be worthwhile trying to contact him for more up to date info on publications and even birding sites. I know it is possible to go to Ras Al Khor to watch the flamingos but I'm not sure where/how to get admission to the nature reserve. Also out towards the Polo Club and the Sewerage works there are good viewing sites. Hope it helps!

We love watching the birds. Amazing what activity a bowl of water on the lawn will bring in. I saw a "Birds of the Middle East Book" at Book World in the Dubai Mall.
