I bought a tub of imported US brand ice cream from the supermarket last night and it didn't taste quite right so I didn't eat much but I have an upset stomach this morning. How can I tell if the ice cream was refrozen? I am thinking that maybe it was thawed due to improper storage and then refrozen instead of thrown away. But is there a way to tell from the look and feel of the ice cream?

I would complain but it would depend on the supermarket. Spinneys & Lulu are great at exchanging or refunding, C4 couldn't care less and will blame you for not transporting it home properly - or at least this has been my experience. Spinneys said to me its important to know as they log it and if there are enough complaints they can look to see how its been transported/stored etc. to find out if there is a problem along the line. edited by MirdifIngrid on 18/10/2011

BBell is my favorite but if it is allowed to thaw (either in transit or because of supermarket freezer temps) it will form ice crystals and ruin it. One way I check is if the ice cream comes all the way to the top of the lid. There is a small clear, see thru area where you can actually see the ice cream. If it comes all the way to the lid - thats good. If its pulled away, then (most likely), it has thawed a bit or enough to allow ice crystals to grow. Next, touch the top and feel how soft or firm it is. If it is real soft, you'll feel it. I buy a lot of BBell but won't if any of the above is present. Hope this helps.

It's very difficult to find imported ice cream here that hasn't partially melted before refreezing, and that goes for all brands.

Thanks for the info. That is really scary. I'm not sure whether to just throw it away or complain to the supermarket or the manufacturer. I'm not sure it would get me anywhere.

if has hard crystals in , this is the ice cream melting and the water separating from the cream and re freezing its refrozen and can cause e coli

Yes Princess I, it did. Is that evidence of re-freezing? it can be - it can also be badly made ice-cream.
