Well sodium is an electrolyte that your body NEEDS, along with Potassium and Chloride - so with salt you're getting two of the required ones. Obviously too much is bad for you, but not enough can cause some problems. You have to remember to put back into your body, what it's used up. That's why people who exercise a lot tend to use electrolyte drinks, Gatorade, Pocari Sweat etc etc.

What is the issue with salt and diabetes? Would be very grateful for more info. Thanks! xx Basically it's for people with type 2 Diabetes. Excess salt intake can raise your blood pressure. Any excess salt intake for any person is bad. However, in this climate you have to remember that we sweat much more and so our bodies lose salts and minerals that we need. Very often if I'm feeling lethargic I add a bit more salt as I need the sodium intake as a boost. edited by Chocs01 on 11/07/2011 Thats interesting! I cut out salt pretty much completely, many moons ago ( before moving here) as had high BP in preg that didn't go away after delivery for +12 months. Have found more and more that i'm suffering fatigue. Will add a touch of salt to my food this week and see if i'm bouncing off the walls! :-)

I use sea salt. My DH is diabetic, so salt is not so good for him and the sea salt do not have chemicals in it as do not require treatment. The normal salt is treated with sodium to make it white. I don't have a problem that requires me to use the sea salt, but I like the taste :) In general everything that is not treated and changed much s.o. speak is good for your health :D er what???? ALL salt is made up of Sodium and Chloride! They are the two mineral elements that make salt. The only real difference is the taste as Sea salt is created through evaporation where as other salts are mined and have a few additives like iodine thrown in. edited by Chocs01 on 11/07/2011

The best salt to use is Pink Himalayan salt, it is recommended for diabetics as well. A nutritionist recommend we use it. The label on my bottle of Himalayan salt says: Balances high and low blood pressure, restores the body's alkaline and electrolyte balance, Positive charges in respiratory, circulatory and nervous system. It contains 84 minerals and nutrients for our well being includes: iron, magnesium, calcium, selenium. The great thing is that it is very salty so only a little is used (I love salt hence I had to change to this and I find salt in Dubai has no flavour anyway).

I prefer sea salt, it is purer and you need less of it. :)
