SKYPE issues!!

Having just moved to Dubai, I'd really like to talk to friends and family back home. I downloaded Skype way before leaving England so I already have it on my macbook. It was working fine in England. A couple of days ago I went to the Aspen cafe by Ski Dubai and used their wifi there, and managed to call my mum on skype fine. Why is it now that I'm using an Etisalat internet dongle that it won't let me use skype?! I can log in fine, see my contacts, and it says I'm online, but when I call someone, it won't even get through to ringing, let alone connecting. What's going on? :(

Computer to computer OK. If you're trying to call computer to landline you'll need a vee pee enn and to 'write' an address book with phone numbers, the phone numbers from which calls you'll accept and for the landline numbers you wish to call. We need this to call our family (most of whom are rather old and don't even begin to understand s k y p e). For numbers you wish to call on s k y p e you'll have to find out their s k y p e address and ask to be added to their list of accepted numbers. Any friends on s k y p e would also need to ask you for your s k y p e address and to ask you if you would accept their calls. Are you also aware that with a s k y p e account you can have a UK telephone number as well. Can't remember what the cost is but it can't be too big or we wouldn't have done this. It means that our friends and family can call a UK number and get through to us on our computer - as long as we're logged on with our vee pee enn and S k y p e when they call. Our system is that they either text or email us before they want to call and we make sure that the vee pee enn and s k y p e are on when they call. However, call quality, if they try and call us, generally isn't good so we normally call them back. Cost is minimal.

There'd must be a problem with it as u wouldn't be able to sign innifvit was blocked. I use it on iPad I phone etc without VPN as well. I have been able to sign in, see contacts etc, but was blocked as soon as it came to the actual call. But I was calling a landline...maybe this is the difference?

You're on the 3G dongle and not regular broadband? Sounds like a bandwidth issue to me.

I use it with etisalat no VPN and it is fine. I use it on my laptop or I pad. Hmmm very strange - I'm trying a free VPN right now so we'll see if that helps.

i am using it without vpn too. my guess is that the mobile internet bandwidth is too small for it. bandwidths here are like those of 10 years ago in the uk... try without video stream, maybe helps.

HI Miss Teacher - you need to have a VPN to make it work properly. You can find them online - some are free, but the better ones you need to pay for.
