Also , soda prices rise as the price of sugar (corn syrup)rises , as the price of sugar falls the price of the soda stays the same.

Think the price increase on soft drinks is something related to the obesity campaign

the government regulates the prices on food items so the drinks industry was not allowed to raise prices as far as I understood from someone in the industry. maybe they were allowed to raise now so that is including years of backlog !

Mark my words, 2011 is going to be the year of inflation - this time next year, prices are going to be much, much higher than they are now. There are two causes - one is oil prices continuing to hover around $90 dollars a barrel, and perhaps climbing to $100. All prices in the world factor in oil prices in one form or another, so high oil prices leads to high prices all around. Second, the way the US and European economies dealt with the global economic crisis - by loosening monetary policy and in some cases, printing money - rather than allowing for deflation will ultimately lead to *inflation* around the world. The big problem with that is that salaries for ordinary citizens will take a while to adjust to the higher global prices so the short and mid-term effect will be a lower quality of life and less buying ability for people like you and me. im thinking along the same lines...this whole crisis is far from over... and not to foregt two other housing markets...china and india..waiting to see baloon deflating there too.. edited by Goose on 11/01/2011

I'm with hooters, its been a long overdue increase and its not too bad if you ask me. 1.5AED for a can of coke is still really cheap, you'd be paying about 4AED in oz.

yes it is a 50% price increase which may sound a lot but it is hardly HUGE is it? Pepsi and Coca Cola havent had a price increase in 30 years. Please tell me a product that you buy that hasnt been increased in 30 years? Pepsi and Coca Cola dont make profit on some of their products, for instance, the glass bottles, they cost 1AED for the glass bottle and for the cap to be made. Also, they use special PET bottles which are recycled and thus reduce the amount of waste gonig to landfils. I dont see a problem with paying 1.50 for a can, its still cheap as anything. Anyone who thinks its gonna break their bank is clearly drinking far too much of the stuff.

I went to Lulu's for the first time the other day, and it's great. (Still love C4 though) Really, you just have to watch the indiviudual prices in ANY shop. Take ritz crackers say...they have gone up to 4.25 (or whatever) in Spinns', but that still beats hands down the 14 odd dh they are in C4.

Factor in all the other food stuffs that have gone up recently and it starts adding up to quite an amount each week. So true. Have stopped shopping at Spinneys and Im trying out C4 currently.

Actually, coke and pepsi have been a dh here since introduced in 1988. Average inflation during that time has been 87%, bringing a can of coke to 1.87 dh if they had kept up with ordinary inflation. So, 1.50 a can seems reasonable, no?

[b'>I don't mind the price going up - and agree that it was pretty cheap before (and still isn't that expensive in the grand scheme of things here), but to increase a price by 50% is a bit steep. Imagine if rent or petrol just went up by 50% overnight! In fact don't - it's not worth thinking about. ;) [/b'> Don't need to imagine, rents DID go up by 50% a few years ago and petrol has been increased by 30% on different occasions, over here they don't go by percentages, they think what's the maximum we can get, oh ok thats what we'll charge... agree with this...customer here gets the full tab, whatever someone thinks market will bear or can get away with...ppl ask me all the time what is the best thing to shop for while here...and i disappoint them every time...since there are very few things here that cost less then back home... edited by Goose on 11/01/2011

Apparently soft drinks have been a 1dh for about 10 years! It's going to make a big difference when you order a coke in a hotel though - a manger at the westin was telling us about it as they'll be passing the increase on in full. That's interesting comment - how much a soda is currently in the bars? Like dhs 20? Will it then be dhs30???

I know I came home reeling about it the other day to my DH. Outrageous is exactly the word. However, I [i'>think[/i'> it's still cheaper (by only a little bit now) than buying coca cola at home (UK). Can you imagine if other things just went up by 50%. Madness! There had not been an increase in price for something like 20 years. I bet we wouldn't find that in many of our home countries either :) How much is a can of coke in the UK? eta just checked tesco and an 8 pack is £3.75 or 2 for £6 no idea but i think a six-pack is about 3 quid...(tho they often do multibuy offers etc) edited by Sue62 on 11/01/2011 12 pack in Canada is about 4.50$ (16.50aed).

I did mentioned few days ago in a different thread...but food prices are rising...combined with huge grain loses last year...Florida being hit with frost and bad weather(fruit, juices, veg)... so did the price of sugar around the world(bad weather, not so great harvests)...therefore price of sweets, drinks et all is rising too...combined total effect will be pretty ugly. I'm afraid we are about to see food prices going up and up ...recent hike of soft drink has not much to do with shops in dubai trying to make more money...IMHO edited by Goose on 11/01/2011

Actually I read in the paper this morning that food/drinks prices are set to increase this year, didn't read the full article though only glanced through. Having said that, even though I'm not a regular pepsi/coke drinker I don't think I'm going to stop buying them because they have increased by 50 fils..
