What do people here do with star anis?
I am just curious and hope I might lear something usefull.
I bought some star anis at Global Village the other day. The vendor just wanted to know how many "kilos" I wanted to have. To his surprise I was only interested in half a kilo. I thought I was buying a lot as I intend to take some home for my family. Is it used in the cooking or as herbal treatment e.g. tea, ..

Y'know, if you want to buy a smaller quantity, I've seen and bought 200g bags of whole star anise from Choithrams. A friend bought them in bulk to use in her wedding favors. Homemade potpouri?

I know it is used to prepare a hot drink like tea! People drink it regularly for stomach troubles, excellent for colic, stress relieve!!!. and it is mainly used in some kind of bread "as a flavor, just like cinnamon) But am not sure if a family would need several kilos of it!

That sounds delicious. I will try it out. But for that I would not buy one or even several kilogramm of it. There must be some other use that requires higher quantities to be stocked up in a "common" household:-; edited by Debbie71 on 18/11/2011

You can put it into a beef broth in order to make the Vietnamese soup called pho. You can infuse its flavor in milk/ cream, then use that cream to make ganache or ice cream or any kind of custard dessert.
