Great to see this thread. Having recently been diagnosed with thyroid issues I feel overwhelmed with the amount of information that one seems to require. There seems to be so much you need to know as a patient. I get the impression that we need to know more than the doctors to make sure that the treatment they provide us is suitable. I was diagnosed with DeQuervain in June. Have been through severe hyperthyrodism followed by a normal period and have now gone into hypothyroidism as predicted. By the time I started to get my head round hyper while on beta blockers I had to start learning about hypo. At the moment I'm on 75mg. But when I started on 50mg 4 weeks ago and my th3 was at 22 I had no symptoms. I have started putting on weight but I can blame that on holiday eating and stopping exercise due to holiday. Strangely enough my normal, ongoing for years hair loss seems to have stopped My main worry at the moment are some nodules in the thyroid. Waiting to get results of fine needle aspiration . Does anyone else have nodules? If nothing major wrong with that I will make a conscious effort to educate myself in all things thyroid. Although at the moment getting a phd in astrophysics seems an easier task.

I totally second all that jcdubai has mentioned, Dr.Aana Sepiolo is wonderful, I have been taking bio identical hormones for the past 8 months, feeling wonderful I'm also hoping to start taking T3, she is extremely knowledgeable and as Jcdubai said willing to listen.

Good Morning ....... Have seen a marvelous doctor here, went to see her for HRT treatment for the menopause. Now on bioidentical HRT which is helping hugely after only 3 weeks. She has also been looking into my hypothyroidism and just waiting for the pharmacy to call to say my T3 prescription is ready........so excited i cant wait. For years i have questioned this with numerous doctors and she is the first one who has listened and is offering help. Also have just started eating Brazil Nuts.......so happy days ahead. The doctor is Anna Sepiola at the Dubai London Clinic, cant recommend her enough. Also looked at the TPA site, but its offline currently.......but found others when looking. I have been hypothyroid for years and slowly the symptoms get worse, without you really noticing how hard life has become....it just becomes the norm. The weight piles on no matter what you do, and you just keep struggling though the days. Also with additional medical issues it all gets very blurred and you cant isolate whats what any more. Hopefully this is the start of untangling the web of ailments and feeling energised and human again. edited by jcdubai on 20/09/2013

Just like to say thanks to those who posted to this thread...so helpful and informative. After being diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder it's very easy to feel as though you've fallen into a big black hole...like you're the only one with the disorder and that feeling as of no one understands. I wonder if any UAE doctors read this forum and learn anything from a patients point of view.

Can someone please let me know a path lab that does tests at a reasonable price? XY clinic used to the celiac profile blood test for Dhs. 500. You can call and check with them their costs. They also have a team of doctors who have a more holistic approach to treating common health problems (never been there, but have heard someone from there on the radio once) http://www.xyclinics.com/ Again, you have to be eating a good amount of gluten for at least 6-8 weeks to get a correct diagnosis.

Hi Tigerente, Glad to read you are feeling motivated. When was the last time you had your labs done? Often with thyroid issues/AI's your results show you as being 'within' the normal range (what ever that means) but yet you still display symptoms. Continue to do your research! There are many ways to treat your particular symptoms without needing medication. Don't be shy about taking charge of your own health. Good luck to you. I would also like to add that checking other hormones helps make a more accurate diagnosis too, such as oestrogen and cortisol....There is a brilliant book called The Hormone Cure written by a Harvard educated female doctor...

this thread motivated me really to care more for me and take me serious. Now I need to find someone who can identify what is really wrong I am always tiered, if I slept 4 hours or 10 hours. I am very moody, feel always cold, have hairloss and no its not the water here, gained a lot of weight at one point and had since struggle to lose it and stay stable. Only possible when I am almost constantly looking at my intake, no carbs at all. At the time I started to gain weight I started with hairgrowths where a girl should not have hair and pigmentation issues. I saw couple of docs and all told me there is nothing wrong with me, well before all this issues I was a very active and happy girl and I feel nowadays sorry for myself to think who I became. Of to read more and to get a doc who understands at least that something is wrong and to understand the lab results. Any suggestions with wich doc to start. I believe I can not afford Dr. Amel as my insurance doesn't cover.

You are right iveranodxb! Vast majority of people (Dr's included) do not think of your auto-immune condition as separate to your hypothyroidism and that lifestyle changes like diet, stress management, gut health or refuelling brain chemistry can actually help with encouraging the Immune response to calm itself. When dealing with any chronic illness, I strongly believe that healing from within will give you the improvements your are looking. It certainly makes taking the synthetic meds a lot easier and usually lowers the dose in the process!!

Hi Ladies, I have read this thread from start to finish with great interest. I have been dealing with Hashimoto's and an under active thyroid for over a decade. I am now able to manage my condition and it has completely changed my life. Please have a look at the link below as you may find it helpful. http://justbproject.com/blog/2013/4/15/justb-healthy- This is great Jussie! Thanks for sharing! It just all makes sense, right? I do get annoyed every time I go to my GP (who is wonderful as a person) all she wants to do is prescribe anti-depressants, higher doses of synthetic hormone (which gave me huge palpitations that scared me to death), etc NOT a single time did she discuss lifestyle choices or had a holistic approach...So when I told her no thanks and embarked on my own journey of diet change, etc I got better, clinically proven with test results. We do get brainwashed a lot, it is interesting to learn what motivates your doctor to prescribe that specific medicine as they do get commission after every single prescription from pharmaceutical companies.

Interestingly, I am reading and watching a series of fertility videos that explain how traditional cultures have beautiful clean strong teeth, no heart attacks, asthma, allergies. The focus is on their diets: natural vegetable fats like coconut oil and olive oil, animal meats especially organ meat, animal fat and dairy fat. It is all in relation to fertility and it is making a lot of sense. I think we might have been brainwashed with a lot of commerce oriented lobby-pushed data. http://www.foodrenegade.com/ Completely digressed, sorry. It's called the Paleo diet...I follow that and it just works for me. Might not work for everyone though.

You are so welcome Dubaidesertbear! As you will already be aware, having hypothyroidism and also Hashimoto's can be very difficult to manage. I had Hashimoto's first, which in turn led to my hypothyroidism. So treating my auto-immune has always been my priority and has now become a passion (and career) to help others do the same. Good luck to you all.

Jussie thanks for posting this. So interesting. When I was in very early stages of my recovery I got in pool and could manage 10 minutes of light exercise and then slowly built my muscle tone up again and eventually could keep going for over an hour. Very gentle but helped so much as I was so weak from lying on sofa wrapped in million blankets for over a year. Rosemary is another herb I was told to use when ever possible to help the inflammation. One word of caution. I was convinced really against my better judgement to go on hydrocortisone to kick start adrenals and thyroid. Don't do it. I ballooned up, my skin got so thin and just felt horrible. Look for natural alternatives. Would never go on it again

Yes Chocobella, my hair is great now, busy growing it for my daughters wedding and it is lovely and thick. I always know if I go out of balance when my hair starts falling. I am leaving on a long vacation tomorrow to Texas so good luck to everyone. Read the forums online and Facebook. We can't have too much information on this horrible disease we all have. I pray that you all can find some relief. Best wishes

I have to say having gone dairy and gluten free has helped me hugely with my Hashimoto's (hypothyroidism and thyroiditis), I can't recommend it highly enough. I'm a firm believer in you are what you eat (to a certain extent). Coupled with right medication, preferably non-synthetic.....

Hi Terrible_twos! I did not intend to go gluten free, it was accidentally so because of my high protein diet. I love NKD, but as I wasn't aiming to be gluten free I haven't tried them, I will now. I read up on Celiac disease and my! It's confusing!! Nevertheless, I now have a great starting point because of all the suggestions here. I am going to start with the suggested tests. Stop the thyroid madness is a great resource. I am so sorry Janatks I hijacked your thread, but I hope the ensuing conversation has been a huge help to all of us. Tattie Bogle, I shall definitely look into Homeopathic. I've heard some good things about Ayurvedic treatments too. Dubaidesertbear, thank you so very much! I wanted to ask you, were you able to recover the hair you lost once you changed medication to T3? I lose a good amount every day and now they are possibly less than half of what they were. Is there any hope of getting them back? edited by Chocobella on 16/09/2013

Forgive my ignorance, but what is AH xmasbaby? Terrible_twos, thank you for this pointer. I *think* I am almost gluten free at the moment in my every day diet, but, I do love my pizza once a week. My TSH levels are and have been within range for the past one year. How could I get tested for Celiac disease? More importantly, which Doctor could I see who would work with all my symptoms and possible causes? Tattie Bogle, that's amazing! I think AH is American Hospital? Chocobella, you'd be amazed at the number of products that containe hidden gluten in them! N_K_D pizza have a yummy gluten free pizza and I believe Russo's is another place where you can gluten free pizza. Again, I really don't think you should go gluten free without doing the right tests - if you do the celiac panel blood test when you've not been eating gluten, you will get a false negative. Doctors - Dr. Rolef is a gastroenterologist who has been recommended here many times - She's one of the few doctors here who really knows about celiac disease. If you're looking for alternative therapies, then you could try going to homeopath as suggested by Tattie Bogle. Dr. Heather Eade is a naturopath in the Dubai Mall medical clinic - again she's someone who has been recommended on EW many times. If you do a search on here for endocrinologists, you'll come up with some names. I've been going to Dr. Amel B. Tayeb. edited by terrible_twos on 15/09/2013

Just looked it up. In house drugstore.com. They have armour in various strengths and Tertroxin(t3) or cytomel. I used them few years ago and shipped to US and UK to my Aramex shop and ship box no prescription was needed. I would still try to work with a GP to monitor you but at least you could get the meds.

I found this: http://www.themuslimtimes.org/2012/03/science-and-technology/health/are-you-tired-desiccated-thyroid-extract It seems you might be able to get the med through a pharmacy as Dubaidesertbear says, but it will have to be supervised by your physician.

I see a specialist in London who prescribes. I believe you can get cytomel T3 at American hospital pharmacy but has to be prescribed by one of their drs. At one stage I got armour or west thyroid shipped here thru in house drugstore. An online pharmacy but that was around 5 years ago but worth googling
