Dubaidesertbear where do you get your NDT/T3? I get hypothyroid (low aT3, higher rT3) the second I lose any weight and I am not thin. I want to lose 10lbs but cannot seem to do it without dropping into hypothyroid - which of course then makes it near impossible I'm already gluten-free so it's not that, it's just my body being ridiculous and thinking it's not getting enough food - which is silly because I have a decent amount of fat to lose

That is the right lab. I had RT3 done there but was at least a year ago. Yes can be connection with gluten for sure but I found once I healed my gut the issue went away. I did this through concentrated use of various Pre and pro biotics

Forgive my ignorance, but what is AH xmasbaby? Terrible_twos, thank you for this pointer. I *think* I am almost gluten free at the moment in my every day diet, but, I do love my pizza once a week. My TSH levels are and have been within range for the past one year. How could I get tested for Celiac disease? More importantly, which Doctor could I see who would work with all my symptoms and possible causes? Tattie Bogle, that's amazing!

I was told I'd be on thyroxine forever but didn't go on it and used natural/homeopathic medicine. Still go for a check up every 6 months and a few hiccups along the way but 10 years and only half a thyroid gland later! :) Dr Bala at City is v good. <em>edited by Tattie Bogle on 15/09/2013</em>

Just to add - celiac disease has over 200 symptoms. Most doctors are not even aware of these symptoms and still think that weight loss and diarrhea to be the most common complaint of celiac disease. And if you are over weight, they will not even consider it! Chocobella, most of the symptoms you mentioned can be related to celiac disease - it causes malabsorption, so apart from you not absorbing your thyroid medication, you may be deficient in iron, vitamin D and other important vitamins and minerals. so true. I was only tested because of malabsorption (top of my weight range) and have atypical symptoms. I was insanely low in iron, vitamin d, and othes. I am low to mid-range now which is better than before. Similar for me - I was tested for celiac because my TSH levels were varying from one end to another over a period of 1 year and the doctor felt that it could be because of malabsorption of the thyroid medicine.

You might want to read up on the connection between gluten and the thyroid. Some doctors suggest going on a gluten free diet to reduce symtpoms. Also, those with Hashimotos are at a higher risk of celiac disease (some say undiagnosed celiac disease causes all other autoimmune diseases including Hashimotos, etc.). If you have Hashimotos and you see that your TSH levels are not going down (in spite of increasing doses of thyroxine), then you must ask your doctor to consider testing for celiac disease. But please do not go on a gluten free diet without consultation with your doctor and doing the right tests. I agree. I was tested for celiac and tested positivly after being diagnosed with Hashimotos. For those who asked below, I see Dr. Hubert at AH for my treatment here. I aslo have a doctor back home.

Dubaidesertbear, is this the lab http://www.uaeresults.com/1024253/Laboratories_-_General/Dubai/Emirates_Specialized_Laboratory/ I couldn't find any with the name Emirates diagnostic Lab. Also, ESL does not do RT3. <em>edited by Chocobella on 15/09/2013</em>

I tried going on TPA Dubaidesertbear, but it said the website was changing between hosts and to contact later. I also found this website. http://thyroid-rt3.com/ I'm reading up on Endo as well as we are trying to get pregnant. So it's all a bit much, Broccoli and other cruciferous veggies are good for Endo but bad for Thyroid and so on :-) Thank you so very much for the place to go for tests, but finding someone to interpret those results will be the challenge. Is there no doctor in Dubai who works by these methods and by listening to her/his patients? Oh Dubaidesertbear!! I am this sad, fat, balding, cold woman!! :-(

Once you get balanced there is something called LDN which is in addition to all we have been talking about. It is hugely beneficial to any autoimmune diseases but you have to be in a good place first. Balanced thyroid meds, good iron, no candida, healed gut. Read about it but work first at getting to optimal health Between T3 and now LDN I have my life back and back working at what I love Christmas decorating and enjoying life. My husband has his wife back again too. Gone from this fat, sad, freezing cold wrapped. in blankets, balding woman to feeling great for my age and loving life.

Try emirates diagnostic lab on Al Wasl. Sometimes called Al Borg. They do the Genova testing. The cortisol I had done was saliva and I mailed it to the UK.they also do the RT3 test but you need to look on stop thyroid madness forum for formula they have for actually reading your RT3 result. It is not just the number they give you from the blood test. You must test FRee T3 and FRee T4 on same day as the RT3 and then it goes into a formula which gives you your answer. Just ask the people on the forum. Everyone will help you. All the info is on TPA website

Pleasure. I was literally nearly dead. But just read and read and persisted. I see a GP but all my info and treatment is from specialist of functional medicine in Harley street. Yes it does get expensive. But there is a lot you can do for yourself. The arrogant and closeminded thyroid drs force us to self treat . Please buy Paul Robinsons book on Amazon. He is not a dr either but figured it all out. I think it was $13. Recovering with T3. It will change your life. He struggled like we all do. Probiotics will help as well as digestive enzymes with gut issues and carpal tunnel and plantar fasciitis will disappear with no treatment once your thyroid is properly treated. Join all the forums and educate yourself . Only way to go n there is hope

Oh Lord it's like you've listed my symptoms Dubaidesertbear!!! Weight and hair and energy as well as anaemia, gut issues, carpal tunnel and plantar fasciitis are all indicators that you are not being treated properly. ALL of the above!! Thank you for all your help! I don't have insurance so I'll have to tread carefully here. Where is your Doctor Dubaidesertbear? I am quite certain now that I need T3 and iron as well, plus the Brazil nuts. Thank you, thank you, for giving me hope that I can live normally, have normal results of efforts and not the contrary, and have energy and feel tired for a reason! Bless you! <em>edited by Chocobella on 15/09/2013</em>

Yes Stop thyroid madness will give you lots of information. Try TPA as well even tho you aren't English they may let you join. You can't get the meds here unfortunately but lot of forums tell you how to order them online but still need to be monitored. Endocrinologists are not always our friends as they go very strictly by blood numbers. You have to find gynae or GP who is open minded. I would try Eternity medical clinic as I know they work with bio identicals which is similar to NDT. I haven't used them myself but would be good starting point. Weight and hair and energy as well as anaemia, gut issues, carpal tunnel and plantar fasciitis are all indicators that you are not being treated properly. You can get iron from pharmacy and get a baseline test and then take daily allowance on bottle and test again in three months. You will not get better overnight but for most of us we have been battling this for years. It is a fine balance to get it all right. I have been stable for 18 months now and lost 25kg but still daily battle to keep levels right. My hardest is to keep my iron levels high enough. On T3 and T4 issue. People mainly take T4 and the body is supposed to convert to T3 which is the active hormone that drives our metabolism. In my case we discovered I don't convert. I believe lot of people have this issue. So for me I take T3 every 3 hours thru the day. It is like putting fuel directly in the tank. Another issue that plays into all this is stress. Stress affects our adrenals which in turn affect our thyroid. I order online a cream called Adrenastim and adrenacalm which have been hugely beneficial for me. Hope this info helps. I feel what you are all going thru and makes me so mad that the medical fraternity basically fails us. Hang in there and just keep acquiring knowledge and don't take no for an answer.

I have been suffering from Hyperthyroid for 9 years now. Before that I was "hyper' which was a nightmare. Could not run more than a few steps as my heart would race so fast I thought I would explode and the hallucinations and feeling agitated all the time/fighting with everyone I loved......so when I became better after my first born and then tipped into hypo after my second child I thought weight gain and lethargy was a price I could live with. Now I see on this forum that there might be a way to actually live normally. The Brazil nuts helped a lot and now I will also start an iron supplement. Thank you ladies! To finish off my day, could anyone suggest what I can do the hair loss I have had. 9 years of this has left me with thinning hair/bald patches....HELP!

Dubaidesertbear, thank you for the detailed reply. I've been on T4 for the last few years. I have been battling my weight for more than a year now with very streamlined diet and regular exercise. But I seem to be gaining weight instead of losing, my hair are falling out in hundreds, and I am not energetic. After being immensely disappointed with my weight, I got to thinking there has to be something else. I am not English, and I don't know who to contact here who would help me out. The country I come from has very traditional doctors who probably will not touch the newest information with a bargepole. The last doctor I saw did not even speak to me, simply saw my results of the Thyroid profile which did not have RT3 covered, and prescribed the T4 in a changed dose. I don't have a GP here. Can you get NDT here in Dubai? Can I dose myself? Is this the page you had suggested https://www.facebook.com/StoptheThyroidMadness xmasbaby, I've been waiting for the day I will feel myself and jump out of bed for years now! Is your doctor here and could you please let me know who it is? Also, could I start iron supplement on my own? If I can what would the dosing be? You cannot imagine my gratefulness for guiding me to a doctor here in Dubai who could help me. I am battling Endometreosis also and sometimes, I cannot get through the day. Many many thanks! <em>edited by Chocobella on 15/09/2013</em>

I am on both T4 and T3 and I feel great - for the first time in years, up at at 6am without having to drag myself out of bed! I'm more alert and feel quite "normal" again. I take iron daily - double dose one week, single next and double next. My doctor told me that helps to keep stores high. I still gain weight easily and if I indulge one day, it shows on the scale the next day. However, I have the energy to exercise so that helps.

I also have Hashimotos. Thyroxine is T4 only. You need Natural desiccated thyroid or NDT or T3 alone which is cytomel. My issue became that I could not absorb T4 and so you take more thinking you need more but it actually pools in your body and becomes reverse T3 or RT3. You can ask for a blood test for RT3. Same as vitamin levels. Just talk to your GP . While B, D, magnesium, zinc and selenium are important Iron or ferritin is the most important. I actually have an I've treatment of a vitamin cocktail every few weeks but take iron twice or three times a day Please buy Paul's book online was not very expensive. Will teach you so much. Also look on Facebook for a group called stop thyroid madness. The more you can read you will find it will help you understand. You are not alone, there are millions of people worldwide fighting to get the right thyroid treatment. I am not a dr but have spent last 9 years reading and understanding this thyroid issue and finding the right drs. If you are English join an online English group called TPA. Thyroid patient advocacy. It will give you a wealth of resources including who to see.

I agree re vit B complex tabs and also took kale supplements. peanuts, peanut butter and soya are supposed to inhibit thyroid function so steer clear. yoga exercises which force the blood backwards in to your thyroid gland are supposed to be very good, i.e. lying flat on the ground with your feet over your head and behind you, or a headstand against the wall.

Niki63, I will be so grateful if you could tell us where you got your Vitamin levels checked. I take a multivit but it does not contain Iron, but it does have selenium. How much selenium and iron is recommended as a supplement? I've been reading a lot about this and have recently read about selenium too. Dubaidesertbear, I am on thyroxine 75. What medication is this, T3 or T4?

I really need to read more on it. I have low iron and at the moment would wish for a good doctor. On here there is an endocrinologists recommended but the insurance is not covering. I think people who do not have an under-function do not understand how you are feeiling.

What Nikki says is so true. I have been where you all are . Believe me T4 medication alone will not make you feel better. You either need a mixture of T3 and T4 or as I do T3 alone. Buy a book on Amazon called recovering with T3 by Paul Robinson. I got my life back, lost weight etc.. You do have to supplement. Iron is one of most important. If iron low your thyroid meds will not work. It is hard to find a dr to work with you. I had to go to London but I have been to **** and have come back. Working and living again. The Brazil nuts or selenium alone will not do it. It will help for sure but you need more than T4 . I have read some scientific papers were they are now proving that T4 does not cross the brain barrier. We just have to educate the endocrinologists now. Don't mean to preach but I know how sick I was and how far I have come.
