Hello! DH and I are thinking of moving to the UK... mainly because DH feels stunted in his career growth and wants to do a Masters there, but also because we'd like to spend a few years there so we can spend time with my family and so on. DH and I met here in Dubai. He's Syrian. other than the Syrian bit you could be talking about my DH!

I've recently applied for my spouse settlement visa, and boy oh boy is it not an easy process. You need many supporting documents to prove your relationship, and all sorts. I applied a month ago, and have heard nothing yet. They say it can take anything from 10 working days up to 12 weeks. My DH has been in the UK for two months, we didnt realise it would take this long!!! The spouse visa is worth it in the end though, but it's rather pricey too. It's valid for 2 years, before the two years is up, he can apply for Indefinate Leave to Remain, and after that he can apply for citizenship, which will prob be about 4yrs after first entry

It would probably be easier to obtain a student visa once a place is secured at university but it has restrictions such as only being able to work a max of 16 hours (that's what it was last year but could have changed) a week and there is no guarantee of being able to obtain a visa after the Masters has finished so he would have to leave the country once it expires. It is a much longer process to obtain a visa through you but it means he would be able to work and live in the UK longer. You will be interviewe and asked some very in depth and often personal questions too. The Home Office is filled with information that will help you make a decision- http://www.ukvisas.gov.uk/en/ Hope this helps you.

DH and I met here in Dubai. He's Syrian. I'm not sure how we should go about doing this and all the massive complications because he's Syrian! Does he get his University place first and the go to the UK on a Student visa? Or would it make more sense for me to apply for his residency visa as a spouse? Really lost here and any thoughts would be much appreciated!
