I guess there has to be some kind of restriction that ensures that everyone has a valid passport for the full length of their stay in another country, otherwise you'd inevitably get people trying to go on a 2-week holiday with only 3 days left, which would undermine the whole concept of the passport.

Thanks, Edna. How strange! I've heard of not being able to apply for visas with little time left on your passport, but denying entry is really bizarre - if a passport is valid, then it ought to be valid! Well, when I rule the world...

Check the immigration requirements of just about any country in the world and you'll find that they insist on a minimum of 6 months' passport validity. It's an international agreement, but how and why it was decided to go with 6 months specifically - no idea. Many airlines will refuse to let you fly if you have less than 6 months remaining on your passport because if they did and you were denied entry to your destination, the airline would be liable for a very large fine.

Serious question...where does the information about less than 6 months validity - invalid come from? It does seem odd - it's still valid, so why would anyone consider it invalid?

Back in January, a friend of ours was able to fly back home to the UK and then return to Dubai with only two months left on her passport. Nobody raised an eyebrow or made a comment at either end.

I too would be very cautious about attempting to enter the UAE (and many, many other countries) with less than 6 months on one's passport. I left Dubai with just 3 months on my passport in the summer, it was no problem going home to the UK but I was told at passport control I would need a new passport to come back in, even with a residence visa. you can go back into your home country with an expired passport ie you went back to the uk and so they would let you in if you had 1 day left or it had expired but thats not the case with other countries, here in the uae they usually are not that bothered as long as the visa is uptodate etc but saying that the airlines would not let you on if less than 6 months usually as they can get a big fine if you are stopped

Ladies! I am not giving anyone any advice but simply stating the facts which i have experienced myself. And as i said in my original post, we spoke with the immigration officials at Dubai Airport before we made any travel arrangements, so i did not leave it to "luck". I don't believe my post is misleading and it was not done out of "excitement" but simply to provide information to anyone who is in a similar situation.

Hi I have recently been away for 2 weeks and traveled with less than 6 months validity on my British passport (also without a UAE residence visa as the passport has to be renewed before i can get my residence visa). I had no trouble going and returning through immigration. Thought i would share it with anyone who is thinking of travelling and is in a similar situation. We did make extensive inquiries with the immigration department before booking our flights and it seemed they weren't fussed about the "6 month" rule as long as the passport was valid. I think you need to say where you travelled to but in any case i agree that it's misleading to post things like this, however excited about it you may be !!

I agree, this is not such good advice. I know of plenty who have been refused entry/exit etc....except to leave UAE straight to their home countries.

A friend of mine with a Saudi passport was refused entry to the UAE as his passport had less than 6 months validity. Luckily he had his Saudi ID card on him and was allowed entry with that. Please don't post such stories - you were lucky; most people aren't and some countries wouldn't let you exit I was typing the same thing ... somone at work was not allowed to travel to Qatar as he has 5 months left on his passport.
