Okay, some more info ... They also might consider getting a very cheap broadband/net deal and THEN -- since they'll have to upgrade their telly anyway! -- purchasing a digital TV from John Lewis or somewhere like that, plus a Freeview package. Once you've bought the equipment, you always have the channels -- no subscriptions required -- and it will give them good access to a lot of the main channels available outside the terrestrial network. http://www.freeview.co.uk/Services/Freeview2 tells you about the service, but check out the CHANNELS page to see the stuff on offer.

I'd say it's a LOT more than likely that they will have to update their telly, because old TVs simply don't have the right cable holes in the back to hook things up! Sounds to me like your 'rents may just want a basic package which gives them more than the normal channels but slightly less than the whizzbang offerings that Sky will probably offer! What you should do -- if you're doing the research on their behalf -- is check out some websites which compare the various packages available. Virgin has a good one, from memory, and if you do a google for [i'>broadband package compare[/i'> there are a host of websites to have a hunt eg http://www.broadbandchoices.co.uk/digital-tv-and-broadband-bundle-guide.html Regardless of the package you choose though, I'm afraid if they want more than just the Beeb, ITV and Channel 4, they'll need to update their telly. Happily though, they're pretty cheap these days! :D Good luck [again'>. :) ETA: I'm just going to look for some more info though ... will post more in a sec. . edited by WaxMuch on 05/04/2011

Thanks, yes I'm asking for them :) They just want a basic package with internet and if poss sky channels but not all the bells and whistles. This is going to sound strange but they have a tv that is incredible old and tiny! haha can any set be used to connect to a sky box? Or will they have to update there ancient set too?

Depends on who's offering the best deal, what services they want etc etc ... I'm assuming you are asking on their behalf? So that they can set up their own 'net/TV connections? We used BT for a while but then switched over to Sky for everything [we wanted the pay-TV sports packages!'>, including broadband and internet. Very easy. A Sky guy comes 'round, installs the box on your telly, sets up your wireless [if you want it'> and all that other stuff. Again, it just depends on what services they're looking for, and how much they want to pay. There are usually [well, there were when I was there!'> lots of ads promoting various packages in the press and on TV, so they should phone around a few service providers and get a good quote. Oh, and there are normally great deals as well, depending on what bits and bobs one wants as part of the package. Good luck. Hope that helps. :)
