Would a plastic surgeon be an acceptable choice or should it be a general/breast surgeon? Lump is most likely benign.

Any advice much appreciated.

Seek out and see the best breast surgeon you can find. Don't mess around. Lump may be benign, but ... what if it isn't? A breast surgeon will be the best one to tell you how to proceed: lumpectomy, biopsy .... Alternatively, in the US, a number of radiologists who specialize in mammograms and other breast imaging are the ones who do the biopsies these days. I went for a routine diagnostic mammogram -- same as a routine mammogram + ultrasound and given to women considered high risk. The radiologist and I had a five minute discussion on my history and based on that he ordered an MRI. He then did a needle biopsy based on the MRI findings. He was the one who called me and told me I had invasive breast cancer. I'd had two previous biopsies, both benign. Assume the best, but don't mess around. A plastic surgeon, any good plastic surgeon, will refer you to a breast surgeon or radiologist. I'd pass on the general surgeon ... do you really want someone who does gallbladders and tonsillectomies to be determining whether or not that lump is something you should be concerned about? Don't mess around. Take it seriously until you get the final results. Don't worry your head off, just be diligent and practical.
