I'm so sick of eggs here that smell horrendous after cooking and even leaving a pungent smell on the plates after washing. Aren't eggs not supposed to have a smell?? Do regular grocery stores carry "normal" eggs or do I Need to go to a speciality store?

after a little research, yes they do, and great to support a local company! http://www.greenheartuae.com/?product=eggs thanks for recommending.

i've started getting the new brand of UK free range in spinneys but they are 20.50 a pack of 6. it's quite hard to get eggs that are free range + organic + vegetarian i.e. not fed on fish. do the Greenheart ones meet all of those requirements?!

Chi2dxb I can completely relate about the smell of the eggs here, it's awful! I would say I have tried most eggs which are available here, organic/free range/local/imported...they all leave a very "eggy" odour on the crockery and cutlery. I find it's not possible to rinse the "eggy" crockery and cutlery and leave in dish washer, I literally have to soak and wash them immediately. I've been here for about 17 years and it's only in recent years that this "eggy" odour has come about...thought it was just me and was actually quite relieved to see your post. Maybe our sense of smell is a little more wired up than others. Lol do you find yourself holding up plates and smelling them after washing? I always giggle and think if someone saw me, they'd wonder what I was doing

I like the eggs from Saudi, like Al Watania, and Greenheart eggs. Greenheart does a special offer of 12 eggs for DH 24 every so often.

Wow! 18dhs for 6 eggs!! Worth it though. Like most things, if you buy from responsibly farmed small producers then it's going to cost a lot more than mass produced with little thought to animal welfare or sustainability. I'd much rather go without eggs than buy cheap mass produced ones. Exactly. It's only the price of a coffee which you wouldn't think twice about.

I remember buying eggs in a shop in Bur Dubai and they have a very strong smell of curry when i boiled them, make me sick, not sure what the hens were being fed, but put me of eggs for ages. I was in Scotland recently and we bought some eggs, they very huge, never seen eggs thats size before. They were probably haggis eggs! :-)

I sympathize, though I do not feel particularly 'high maintenance, I cannot, under any circumstances, stomach a bad egg. Try the organic Tregor eggs from France. They are small, well travelled, and expensive but are absolutely delicious. I have bought them at Spinney's, Lulu, and Waitrose.

thanks for all your suggestions. will try out the grocery store and greenheart ones. jeano, i've had to soak the plates in vinegar and then sprinkle baking soda on top and i let it sit for a while and then wash either by hand or load in dishwasher. recently, i started rinsing them with highly diluted ammonia, that did the trick right away. that whole process has become so tedious that i've started using disposable items just for eggs. it's cheapest to mix the eggs in a small plastic cup with a spoon and then straight into the frying pan. and for eating...disposable plates. i hate the idea of creating so much waste, but the time and resources i'm putting in to wash the "eggy plates" is too much too! but even with the disposable stuff, the smell of the cooked egg is blechh!

I never had the issue with egg smell on my cutlery and plates. But since I am trying to live a bit healthier I have been buying organic fed eggs at Geant. It's a green box, 21aed for 12 eggs.

I only buy organic eggs, either from Organic store or Greenheart. (yes Greenhearts are small) They are a lot more expensive than standard eggs in the supermarket but my personal preference is for my family to eat organic where possible, just because they are free of additives, hormones and antibiotics. edited by TimTam on 04/09/2013

Same. They are tiny but perfect for lunch boxes. Not good for baking though in which case I buy the French ones. just weigh them up - a large egg should weigh 50 g (out of shell) 30g for white and 18g for yolk. edited by IzzyOnTheSeat on 04/09/2013

As MrsMozz said, Waitrose stock their own and Duchy eggs, and Choitrams generally have one choice each week of free range organic eggs. Just check the sell by dates - most eggs here have been irradiated, and hence have a horrendous shelf life of up to three months! (even the organic local or French eggs). The eggs listed above, have a week to 10 days - as they should. As MrsMozz says, eggs here are horrendous. It made me so worried that I bought a few hens, which are now running happily around my garden, nibbling on most of it, and we now enjoy fresh eggs every day!!!!!! The shelf life of food here is so long that it is worrying. Eggs should not last for three weeks, let alone three months!!!!!!

I always buy the free range ones - they are French I think, approx. AED 18 for a box of 6 so not the cheapest but free range eggs are something I feel strongly about - never noticed a strange smell from them and we eat them regularly.

Spinneys have Duchy of Cornwall or Waitrose free range eggs, I find these to be the best...
