just started the little one on solids and he is loving everything. He is being a little piggy and eating loads and drinking his milk as well. But now he is constipated. Hasn't gone properly in 2 days. Anything I can do for him? Does sugar water work at this age?

TIA

Thnx meals, sandfly- I understand wht ur tryng to say, and i hope this is the case too. coz till now she has never missed a day. and has pooped atleast 2-3 times a day when she was entirely BF. I introduced solids when she was 6MO. she hates puree's and i'm in support of BLW. So she gets to munch on anything that she can hold. I think it was the steamed carrots and sweet potato that has her system jammed. I can't make up my mind , should i give her another suppo. or wait for another day.. She doesnt look uncomfortable to me. BUT she has never missed a day before. :(

DD was also very constipated (esp after we introduced carrot), we gave her prunes, etc, etc and finally what helped was WARNING THIS COULD BE TMI my MIL sat down on the floor, legs in front of her slighting apart with newspaper below her, put DD astride (one leg over each leg) and that gave DD pressure to poop. Poor thing could not push it out without the sitting position. That also helped us get her used to pooping like that and now she rarely poops in her nappies (unless ofcourse we are out in which case mom goes through nappy changing H E L L)

and are you sure she is constipated? BM doesn't create a lot of waste, and it is not unknown for wholly breast fed kids to go a week between poos, without being constipated at all. Even when adding solids, it isn't time in between poos which determines whether a child is constipated or not - see http://www.webmd.com/parenting/baby/diapering-a-baby-9/baby-constipation <<True constipation occurs when the baby's stools cause significant difficulty and discomfort when being passed, because they are very dense and hard. This definition excludes the baby who has soft, easy-to-pass stools once a week, even if he seems to strain a lot in the process.>> Sorry if that is all obvious, just your reference to the 3 days made me wonder if it was that which was worrying you.

You shouldn't "technically" need to give her water - but why not offer it to her [b'>after[/b'> a BF. Especially in this hot climate - you'll find you will need to offer water earlier than say back in the UK. Only offer it after a bf to avoid her replacing volume of milk for water - this way it's just to satiate thirst.

Hi, My 7 MO. baby is still constipated. I gave her a glycerin suppository 3 days back. She did poop after that. But now 3 days after the suppository she hasnt pooped. I thght of only feeding her BM. and now 3 days she is entirely on BM.. I wanted to clear her tummy of any solids that may be causing the problem. :) I tried prune juice. gave her 50ml yestday will give her 50ml today. Is it necessary i give her water even though im giving her BM only ?? any advice wil be appreciated thnx

I tried a few things but what really did it in the end was steamed and pureed dried apricots. Spinneys do a lovely pack of organic ones...think it's called Made in Nature. If it gets really bad, there are some suppositories you can use but can't remember the name - sorry! Hope he feels better soon.

I had the same problem with DD and found the following to work well. - Gently massage and rub baby's tummy in a clockwise direction. Place your hands at baby's navel and massage in a circular motion, moving your hand(s) out and away from the center of baby's belly. - Place your baby on back and lightly hold legs in a half-bent position. Gently begin to move your baby's legs as if they are riding a bicycle. - Alternate "Bicycle Legs" with Tummy Massage. Bicycle Legs may also offer relief if baby is gassy A warm bath may help relax DS and "get things moving" again. Give him a tummy massage as you are drying him. Hope this helps! this helped me as well... and i bought the "itsy bitsy yoga" book, and have been doing some of those poses with my girly, she has been going every day now. haha also i am nursing and started eating flax in my activia, that could be part of it. edited by julzandrews on 20/04/2011

Unless your LO is uncomfortable or straining I wouldn't be concerned... it can take up to 10 days of no bowel motion to be considered constipation if they're happy. However, some option to help move things along - pear juice and/or prunes will help keep your LO regular :)

it's normal! Just let nature take its course - just think, his body hasn't had much fibre at all and now, especially if he's eating a lot (and it's probably fruit and veg, no?), and so is getting used to it. 2 days? Don't worry... really, don't. In fact, I can't help feeling that the last thing his body needs, just as it's learning to digest stuff properly is a forced purge! edited by Hello.Again.Kitty on 18/04/2011
