Any infant dietitians out there? Question about calcium.
BFC I think you mentioned you were training in this stuff?
Anyway I know that you are supposed to include vitamin C with a meal to boost iron absorption from non-heme iron sources and avoid calcium as it hinders absorption. Not such a big issue when DS started solids as he was super into meat from day one and I didn't give him dairy as it gave him reflux.
These days we're having a lot of lentils ;) as he has hit the fussy toddler stage and goes through patches where he doesn't have much meat. We've also re-introduced a little yoghurt and a little cows milk and seems to be going well. So I'm more concerned about maximizing the absorptions. So I'm avoiding combining dairy with his evening meal (although obviously he still gets breastfed, any ideas if the calcium in breastmilk is an issue?)
I'm left wondering, what are good foods to pair calcium with, (does calcium help with the absorption of anything else?) I thought I read somewhere not to pair it with certain fruits as it also blocked the nutrients from them? but can't find where I read this and I read elsewhere that vit C helps with calcium absorption too. I still don't give a lot of dairy (DS is breastfed), so other suggestions for calcium rich foods and the best foods to combine them with would be great.
Due to his reflux I don't give acidic foods like kiwifruit, citrus fruit or strawberries, blueberries seem to be ok though, other good sources of vitamin C that are not too acidic? (we currently eat a lot of fresh papaya and banana, as well as apricots, figs and plums (which I rehydrate from dried as I can't get them fresh organic)
So, without being obsessive about this, any tips on some good meal combos to get the most out of his food or combos to avoid?
