My formula feed son is one in a few days and I'm thinking about the transition to milk .
I used follow on toddler powdered milk with my first son but have read that it is an expensive marketing ploy and in no way necessary .
He is now 2.5 and always has refused regular milk but eats over a kg of natural yoghurt per week plus lots of cheese .
I'm a dairy farmers daughter but never drink the stuff either .

We are out and about and travel frequently and I thought the UHT cartons of full fat milk would be handy and I could use UHT at home too .
I know in many countries it is normal to give UHT to children .
There doesn't seem to be great differences in nutritional value .
Any thoughts ?

champagneblonde - can you let me know which Aussie brand you have found in Geant? BEDH - we also went through this a few weeks ago. We went from baby formula to trying follow on milk formula for a month and then cows milk. Re the latter, we tried all the local brands but I found they weren't as thick or creamy as the milk I was used to from Europe or Aus so I found a UHT type from France called Elle & Vere Le Lait which I always find in stock at Spinneys. DD also doesn't take much milk, she stopped drinking from the bottle around her first birthday so we mix a lot of milk into her food and also give her other dairy products.

I've been giving my younger son UHT milk from 18 months. Not a conscious decision, just happened to be when I switched household from fresh to UHT. I get Al Marai low fat UHT as I prefer the taste.

I've had my DD on cows milk since 14months & sometimes use the little UHT packs when out & about or travelling. And always have a UHT at home in the cupboard just in case... I have recently changed to Australian imported UHT milk which I get from Geant/Le Marche as I am Australian & it is a brand I know & used when in Aus... It's about 2 dirham more expensive than the local stuff, but that's fine by me. Unfortunately they don't do the mini sizes, but she's stopped having milk during the day anyway, preferring food/cheese/yoghurt. BTW- My paediatrician said cows milk was fine & the toddler milk is all marketing... Milk is now only less than 20% of her diet, preferring 'real food' that she can sink her teeth or spoon into! edited by champagneblonde on 03/08/2012

Depends how you look at it, the sodium levels in cows milk are higher than in formula which is one of the reasons its not recommended before 12 months, and also I think the protein levels higher than human milk. So in theory, if you were imitating BFing for 2 years then you would formula feed for 2 years, and personally I would do this with a from birth formula vs a follow on as its more like BM and without added sugar, flavouring etc that is allowed in the follow ons. Depends how much milk he is still drinking though whether you'd worry so much about this stuff. Cows milk is obviously cheaper than formula though, since I stopped BFing I've just used regular cows milk. UHT would be fine, the only thing is that for some reason here it has E numbers, stabilizers etc added to it unlike the UHT back home which is just ultra pasturised cows milk. Its the added **** that puts me off, (although when I buy him babycinos they are most likely made from UHT milk I guess) but from a nutritional standpoint I think they are pretty close. I know my SIL uses formula powder when out and about and fresh milk when at home.
