Thank you lovely ladies - I am glad that you are all around to help and give advice. Started off DS on rice cereal with BM today :) Also, when can we progress to wheat/ oat cereal ? Is it true that rice cereal etc is just empty calories and we should progress to fruits and veggies as they are better? Lemondrops - if I have to make it with formula - how much formula powder should I add for say 1 tbsp of cereal? And should I use warm water or just cooled boiled water is fine ? There are several fruity porridge or baby rice with veggies in the market which are suitable from 4+. You cant introduce wheat before 6+ months as it has gluten. Oat & corn powder are fine at 4+ months. xx

There is most definitely no such thing as a stupid question when it comes to the fiddly, irritating, frustrating process of trying to get food into a LO's mouth! And besides, nothing sounds stupid to me - I had to get a friend over to give me lessons on how to prepare bottles of formula when I stopped BF :D. All the cereals I used had instructions on the side for getting the right consistency. I usually ended up adding a little milk and stirring, then adding more, then more, then thinking it was too thick and adding more, then realising it was too watery and adding more powder. So I always ended up with a huge pot, from which he ate about four spoons. If you're making it with formula, make up your formula as normal then add as if it were EBM. I'd go for a little at a time and see how it works out. edited by DubaiCat on 08/05/2011

Just note that when you mix the rice cereal with EBM, the amalase in the EBM will break down the starches in the rice cereal into sugars so it starts to get watery/thinner quite quickly. Obviously EBM is better for them, but I find that with formula the rice cereal maintains its consistency. That makes sense! I was wondering why, after I mixed the rice cereal with EBM and had a good consistency, after a few minutes it became more "diluted"! Thanks for the tip LD :)

My theory was the maximise the calories when giving the first rice cereal - so I used to either mix it with EBM or formula :)

No such thing as a stupid question, especially when it comes to our little bubbas and their health and well being ;) To be honest, I find this whole weaning thing very challenging.

Some brands have added milk so you only need to mix it with water. If it's without milk you need to add EBM or formula.

Should the baby's rice cereal be made with breast milk (DS is EBF) or can I make it with water ? Am a first time mom and have no one to ask this around me and hoping mums here will help me out with this silly one ! TIA
