They feed more frequently as (I think) they take more of the foremilk when hot and thirsty - I remember phoning a health visitor in panic when DD1 experienced a heatwave in the UK at 6 weeks (also during a growth spurt). She was insatiable and I was at the end of my rope. I was told that in Africa where it was hot babies latch on every 30 mins and just take a bit then stop etc and informed that it was all perfectly normal! Grim for Mums but you just need to keep yourself hydrated and it will pass. They really don't need additional water...we do!

Of course babies get thirsty. Give them cool boiled water inbetween feeds. ...told you someone would suggest that ;) twilight the water is only for the FF babies, EBF babies should be given more milk instead because nature has already diluted it accordingly and they will miss out on nutrients otherwise.

Yes, both my babies were born in the summer, and I would be breast feeding literally every 15 min! Believe me, he will just puke back if he over-feeds.

don't worry, its practically impossible to overfeed a breastfed baby, and since your breastmilk is higher in water content when its hot, its lower in calories than cold weather milk. If he is hungry, just feed him! :) edited by kiwispiers on 05/02/2012

Thanks kiwispiers. Actually, I have been offering the breast to him everytime we come from outside and he goes at it with great gusto, but then it is always the case with him ;). Just wanted to make sure I am not overfeeding him.

Yes they do, and yes you should, babies often sweat a lot and do need more fluid in the heat. You will sometimes be told to offer boiled water in between feeds but actually the water content of your breastmilk increases in hot weather as your body expects your baby to be breastfeeding more often so you should offer breastmilk, not water.

Hi, I am wondering if babies feel thirsty in heat. The weather is getting hotter now and every time I come from outside, I need to down a couple of glasses of water to quench my thirst. It makes me wonder about the little guy. Do babies feel thirsty? Should I offer the breast even if its not time for the next feed. DS is 4 months old and EBF.
