Hi! For those of you who had epidurals during childbirth, how long did it take for the effect to wear off? I had an epidural for my first child and I had no feelings in my legs for almost 8 hours, which is putting me off having another one. However, I am wondering if my experience was normal. How long was your epidural working for? TIA...

Thank you for all the responses. I think I'll have an epidural if possible.

had a beautiful epidural at welcare in march when i delivered my 2nd son via VBAC...the one i had with my firstborn first at Latifa Hospital was unsuccessful and resulted in zero pain relief followed by emergency section. my 2nd one worked a treat though.. i dilated to 10cms while watching a movie and chatting to my welsh midwife - God bless modern science ;)

I've had 2 (both not in DXB though) - 1st one which was 8yrs ago lasted quite a long time post-birth but the last one was fantastic as I could move my legs during the labour (not walk, but stay on the bed and be able to move) and I could shower immediately after. Good luck!

delieverd almost 3 weeks ago and my epidural lasted for about 3 hrs. although after taking that my contractions fell very low and had to be rushed for emergency c-section. my heartrate became dangerously low but that was due to almost nill values of vit D which accelerated epidurals after effects. don't want to scare you. ps: anyone had feeling of numbness even after 17 days of epidural? i sometimes feel numbness in whole of my body.:\:

Hi AD, I've had two epidurals and both had worn off by the time baby was cleaned up and we were ready to move from the delivery suite. I had a bad experience withe my second epi at Latifa Hospital (Al Wasl) so opted not to have one with baby no 3, fully regret not having one and if we ever have a fourth I'll be asking for an epi at 12 weeks ?. Hope all goes well with your birth which ever way you decide xox

AD from my experience as a doula here I have never seen an Epidural last more than 2-3 hours, it does depend on the hospital/Dr of course. If you are so scared that you feel it is going to potantially effect your next birth there are people here you can talk to about it if it would help.

Thank you for this info. I think that if the epidural only lasts a few hours, then I will reconsider having one. I don't know why my first one lasted so long. Knowing this has all of a sudden made me feel more relaxed. I am so afraid of childbirth that I want to cry thinking about it so now that I know that having an epidural is an option, I feel better. :)

My one was worn off enough after 90 minutes to be able to get from bed to wheelchair to move rooms and back into bed' probably 2.5 hours before i was walking on my own. Whilst I think hospitals here don't officially do "walking epidurals" I have heard of anaethesists doing them so they don't take long to wear off plus you are able to move around a little more (although I wasn't brave enough to try standing - i could shuffle around on the bed to get more comfortable).
