I am looking at booking a holiday about 4-5 hours away but would be closer to 30 weeks pregnant, has anyone done this and would you recommend against? Obviously if all is well with the pregnancy. Thanks!

PS DC camping at 27 weeks, were you insane????? I think I must have been. I was suffering really badly with acid indigestion at this stage and ended up outside the tent chucking up in the grass at 3am. Nice! We took a futon mattress with us which was woefully inadequate. Never again!

I fly a lot and took a month long trip from the UK to the States from my 33rd through to the start of my 38th week. No problems at all. Spoke with my midwife about it but as long as you have a single, non-complicated pregnancy you should have no problems at all. Like someone below said, wear the ever-so-sexy compression socks and get up and move around a bit. I found it easy to travel so pregnant. It is easy to get rides on those little carts and jump the cue for security. :) Ask for a bulkhead row but I just made sure I sat on an aisle seat and got up quite a bit... which isn't hard with as much as you go to the restroom at that stage anyway. I let my midwife know, took my maternity notes and looked at the hospitals and doctors in the area where I was visiting so I knew where I would want to go should I need to call someone. I also had my midwife's number on hand and so I could easily call her if I had any questions. Also, check with the airline. They will all have different rules for who can fly and when. Although, I had a doctor friend write up a note and the airline never even checked it and I was BIG at that stage. And, as someone said, check your insurance also. Like Kiwispers said, make sure you have a relaxing time on the holiday. Try to do more time in the pool rather than time walking through town squares. But I loved having that last lone holiday with my husband before baby arrived. Hope that helps. edited by SweetLily on 11/11/2011

The flying part should be no big deal, just make sure you wear the compression stockings and move around a lot, but 4-5 hours should be fine, try and get a front row so no-one can recline onto your bump. Much more important is to make sure your "holiday" is actually relaxing. We took a trip at 27 weeks and I didn't enjoy it all that much, wasn't really up for walking around all day looking at stuff, needed to go to bed early at night which was frustrating for DH, hotel beds were to small to accommodate the nest of pillows I was using under my bump by that stage etc etc. If you are going somewhere where you'll just be sitting around relaxing then go for it, but skip the sightseeing or roughing it type stuff and make sure its not somewhere where you'll be too scared to eat the food etc. PS DC camping at 27 weeks, were you insane?????

I flew alot during my pregnancy for work to the States, Asia, Australia & the UK up until the 28th week. I also went on holidays to Thailand at 29weeks and flew to Australia at 32weeks & returned to Dubai at 36weeks. That was a 14hour flight with no problems. I actually enjoyed it. I guess each pregnancy is different. Ask your doctor, as you would need a doctors certificate stating that you are fit to fly, and when your due date is prior to being allowed on the flight. Most carriers need this from the start of your 29th week. Go and enjoy your last holiday with just you and your bump. You deserve it :)

With my last pregnancy I flew from Oz to Singapore and back at 28wks and was fine. My doctor OKed it and I stayed hydrated and ate lightly on the flight. You may still feel the usual after flight niggles (swollen feet and gassy) but if all is well in your pregnancy then it shouldn't be a problem. Listen to your body though!

Over the summer (from the UK) I went to Spain at 23 weeks, France at 25 weeks and then camping at 27 weeks. Had I not had all that booked in advance, there's no way I would have done it all. I was worn out at the end of it! Then I came back here at 29 weeks and that just about finished me off. Not that I'm ever planning on being pregnant again but if I was, I'd be sitting at home like a big fat slug, not moving and definitely not going on holiday!

I travelled out at 25 and returned at close to 27. Was pretty large and had SPD to boot. Took an 8.5 hour flight to Thailand. But when there we had a really chilled holiday so i guess that matters as well as flying distance. My doctor cleared me for travel till 36 weeks (at the time of return obviously coz of airline restrictions) if I wanted but I went early as planned. I had to carry a 'foetal travel certificate' which just is a doctors note saying I'm fit for travel. Nobody asked to see it though on the way back every emirates staff member that saw me stopped and asked me how far along I was. Told you I was large ;) Eta: oh yeah and a 4 hour transit in Bangkok with an hours flight to koh samui. And got there to discover emirates left our luggage behind. So had to walk aound for agesssss trying to find something other than bikinis to wear until the next day! So I say go for it if you feel fine :). Just book refundable everything if you're booking way in advance. edited by susandiaz on 10/11/2011

I personally would not do it. I am 19 weeks pregnant and I took my last flight before delivery last week. I would not risk plus think how uncomfortable you are going to be in the plane.

I was scheduled to take a trip in March next year and would be 24 weeks pregnant then. As it is a 8.5hour flight followed by a 3 hour car journey I have decided not to travel since finding out I am pregnant. When doing research, it says to make sure that your insurance covers you at the destination and that you have a doctor that you can use there if there are any problems. Whilst researching as well, I also found out that a lady was refused boarding from the airline when she was returning to her home country after taking a trip! She needed a letter from a doctor in the country that she was departing from before they would let her take a flight. If this is your first pregnancy it is hard to predict how you will feel at 30 weeks. Last time I was pregnant I took a hotel break at a local hotel in late pregnancy. This time, I am already having bad leg cramps so I know I could not face a long flight. That said, plenty of people do travel well in to their pregnancies and have no problems. Just remember to drink plenty of fluids on the flight, wear support socks to prevent blood clots and eating light meals the day before and the day of travel is supposed to help.

Agree with Shellly - ask your doctor. We went to Cyprus when I was about 26weeks pregnant (about 4hrs flight away) - I did ok it with my doctor and made sure I had insurance for a decent hospital in Cyprus too! TBH I was huge by this point and wouldn't really have wanted to fly much later.

With all our holidays during pregnancy I always left it up to my Ob/gyn to decide yes or no, I figured she knew best, and she did. ;)
