Also the LactMed database: http://toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/cgi-bin/sis/htmlgen?LACT The no. 1 print resource is [i'>Medications and Mother's Milk[/i'> (written by Dr Thomas Hale); if your healthcare provider doesn't have a copy, then you can ask an IBCLC or Breastfeeding Counsellor/La Leche League Leader will probably have access to a copy and can let you have information to share with your healthcare provider. Thank you, Frances, for starting this thread. It's really important that breastfeeding mums and their doctors have access to accurate information, as this is typically not included in the medication inserts. As a breastfeeding counsellor, I have spoken to mums who have been told that breastfeeding is not compatible with their medication when actually it IS (and they have faced premature weaning or delayed treatment as a result), and also to those who have been told that breastfeeding is compatible with their medication (when actually it IS NOT!). Many medications are deemed safe while breastfeeding; many more are relatively safe (and it is a question of a mother and her healthcare provider weighing up risk/benefit taking into account among other things baby's age/frequency of feeding, dosage of medication, and alternatives); only a few are outright contraindicated. Most medications are not licensed for use during lactation. This is NOT the same as them not being safe. This is why it's important to check. edited by BFC on 05/01/2012
