Over the last 1-2 weeks my 3yr old has been eating less and less. First its a few lunches coming back from his nursery uneaten and now its more often. He supplements with some fruit, biscuits, etc but not having a proper meal like he used to and is just being a lot more fussy about his food. Not sure what to do - the food is the same and if anything I am trying my level best to give him more variety and what he really likes but he is still not easting as well as I would like him to. Help me pls.

You could try making his lunch a little more interesting and fun, I don't mean on what you give him but how it's presented. Lakeland do some great sandwich cutters in different shapes which could make them fun to eat, also maybe let him get involved in helping make dinner, give him a little job and he might want to eat what he puts on his plate. The main thing is for you not to worry though, I remember when one of mine went through the same phase, they soon start eating when they're hungry enough. :) what/where is lakeland? been looking for affordable cookie cutters for ages

Thanks for all the responses. He does snacks (cheese, fruit, etc) quite a lot during the day and maybe thats spoiling his appetite a bit however he used to have that before as well as a proper dinner. Anyway today I varied the food a and was also a bit sterner when he tried to reject it and he seemed to eat more. You are absolutely right ClarieHDP that they have no idea the effect it has on us when they don't eat properly - from complete panic/frustration to absolute jubilation. Anyway will keep trying to change it about a bit and see how I go. Thanks again all.

My DS is 3 and has been this way for about a year. He has certain days where he'll eat lots others not so much. I was always told he'll eat when he's hungry. He weighs around 31 lbs and is not much different in weight than one of his cousins the same age. Don't worry. Mine is on the phase of not eating fruits or veggies. He would rather eat meat, cheese and corn. But will drink us out of a 2L jug of juice in a few days. One thing I was told was to diminish the amount of milk he was getting per day or to make sure he has it after he eats dinner.

When my kids were growing up, I was advised to evaluate what they ate on a weekly basis, rather than a daily basis. The trick is to have good snacks, fruits and veg, cheese available through the day so that when they are hungry, they eat good foods instead of filling up on chips and cookies. As well, each of my three kids ate differently, meaning, two of them did the typical three meals a day plus snacks, but the third one was more of a grazer through the day. It was stressful in the beginning, but look at it over a week and you might be surprised at how much they consume.

They do seem to go through phases my little girl went through a stage of just wanting to eat apples, eggs and rice i would always put other food in front of her but that was sll she ate for quite a while. Shes moved on now and is fine with most foods but there are times when she doesnt eat enough to keep a flea alive. I think they know how worried us mums can get about what they are/are not eating and they play on this - they're very clever. Ss long as hes eating something i would go with the flow if i were you. Perhaps nursery could help with some suggestions and they csn try to get him to eat more with the other children there. There might be something in another childs lunchbox that he might like the look of and you could do that for him. Worth a try.

Hi LovingIt I can't really help but I think don't worry. I'm sure your son will let you know what he wants in the end. I hate to say this and I could be shot down in flames(!) but my son has never eaten vegetables nor fruit and the last time I took him to the doctors was when he had an ear infection when he was 4 years old. What a bad mother I am!!! My son is now over 18 years of age, so I have been lucky and I say, don't worry!
