Our househelp has chicken pox as of today.
I have 2 kids at home, 21 months and 1 month.
I am terrified they will catch it.
Any way I can prevent this happening? Esp for my 1month old..
Very very sad :(

Also, I don't know if they do this here but in the US they will give adults a prescription to help the chicken pox go faster. In the UK they don't seem to believe in this method and like to let you suffer :) but it may be worth taking the maid to the DR if you haven't already. Chicken Pox Treatment - Acyclovir Acyclovir (Zovirax) is an anti-viral drug that may be used to treat chicken pox. In uncomplicated cases acyclovir taken 5 times a day has been shown to cause shorter periods of new lesion formation, fewer lesions, and more rapid healing but only if started within 24 to 48 hours of the onset of the rash.

Shaf, I'm so sorry for you and your little ones.... both of them are vulnerable right now. Firstly, I would isolate the maid, even send her away (or if she has an outside room, tell her not to come into your house) till the scabs have healed. Sounds cruel but really, you don't need the stress of possible infection if by some lucky chance, they have not been exposed... Secondly, keep a close eye on the kids temps. Infants can be hard to monitor. The moment you see spots or an increase in temp, see the doc. There may not be much they can do but while they are at such a tender age, you cannot be too careful. Finally, stock up on bicarb soda or calomine lotion. Lukewarm baths with bicarb are an excellent relief. Can you also get some friends to be on standby for you as you will find yourself up for many nights getting through this? Hang in there.

I think you can count on them getting it. The infectious period and incubation period are such that once you see the sores it's too late. My experience is that I organised a neighborhood christmas carolling once and the last child broke out on Dec 25 and I did not get it until Feb!!! I would be concerned about your help because getting chicken pox as an adult is absolutely debilitating. I was bed ridden for days and delirious. I found this post on a message board reference your LO: If the mother has had chicken pox and continues to produce high levels of antibodies against the virus , the baby is probably immune and may escape this exposure . This passive immunity ( from mom )tends to gradually disappear by 6-12 months of age. good luck

Shaf - I can totally understand your fear. I broke out in shingles when my DD was only 2 months old. As the shingles were right on my trunk by the time I figured out what it was, the doc told me DD definitely would have been exposed as she is bf. I was really worried but then calmed myself with the thought that at least if she gets it now, it'll be over and done with! Funnily enough she did not get it - I guess she did have the immunity from me. So your LO may not get it. Either way, as Green-ish said and from what I hear, it's really not that bad for kids so better they get it now than get it when they are older right?

I thought it was encouraged to have chicken pox as a child?

Have you had chicken pox? If so, your 1mo will still have immunity from you (this is built up in the last few months of pregnancy, and remains for the first few weeks/months). As she is breastfed, she will be further protected. xx Yea, i had it 14yrs back. I really hope she wont get it. I'm keeping her isolated anyways. I think my 21month old is likely to get it for sure as he was interacting with help even yday morning before the bumps appeared. sigh!

Oh Shaf! Just when your DD has started feeling better :-( Follow meals' advice and hope for the best. I once nannies for a boys 3 years and the other 3 months. The 3 year old got pox and the 3 month old didn't. So hopefully one or both your babies will be ok. Holding thumbs you all escape it.

Oh shaf...not nice for you. Take heart, it's not always that bad. All three of my children had CP at the same time last year at 5, 3 and a few months old. A few sleepless nights with the fevers and then it was all over. If your wee one does get in, work closely with a trusted Dr to keep an eye on the possible fevers, hydration levels etc. Take meals' advice on keeping things clean. I hope it misses your little one and that it's a mild case for anyone affected. xx

Unfortunately with CP it's contageous prior to the spots appearing :( Not a lot you can fo now other than send her packing into her room for 6-7 days to avoid any further exposure. Wash everything in HOT water - sheets, towels, clothes etc. Only let her interact with your LO's again once the spots have scabbed over/ cleared... sorry
